Prince Charming is referred to as the "Father of Amoeba Saucercraft Aeronautics" in part for his theoretical design of a bat-winged Vacuum saucercraft. As I've described on earlier blogs, I ran through Dubstep territories in the late 90s by mixing Detroit Techno and experimental dub, and then again in the early 2000s by mixing UKG Grime and Dub.

By the mid 2000s I thought Dubstep was dead, and moved on - but I just looked at Soundscloud and discovered that it's more popular than ever. Go figure. ANyhow, my version of post-dubstep is going to be waay dif than other post dubstep producers because I've been through so many styles and trends already. Not many producers that mixed hip hop and techno with post punk in the mid 80s are working today.

MOLDAVITE BESEDNICE is from the mid 2000s. It's based around a reggaeton style that was popular at the time. It was recorded as part of the Lapiz Lazuli session but didnt come to perfection until after the master was sent to the label. You can hear similar textures that I was playing with at the time, like the scientific recordings of earthquakes and upper atmospheric radiation in the mix. There's a post-dubstep latin influenced reggae sublow bass. There's some dubbed out samples from 100 year old 78s and melodies from Hungarian gypsies. I was getting back into mixing in post-punk instrument playing and adding some morricone style melodies - a style popular with ska and hip hop heads.

Perhaps it's my background in ska music but Ive always appreciated latin styles mixed with my funk. So many post dubstep producers jock funky house, and not enough extend the dub influence into dancehall, reggateon (salsaton, cumbiaton, merengeton etc)

Directed, photographed and edited by Marguerite Darlington. Inspired by the films of the French New Wave.

The beat is a mix of Nepali folk music, Dancehall Reggae, and Drum and Bass. The guitars are influenced by Mali folk music and No Wave (early 80s lower east side nyc jazz influenced noise). Ive been influenced by Nepali music since trekking there and picking up cassettes. THe Mali influence comes from Afel Boukum who I caught at Womad in Seattle. Ive been listening to No Wave since the 80s, when I would catch shows at CBGBs and other spots.

There are several versions of this track that I scrapped before hitting the right combination of styles.

Part of my creative adventure as an artist is exploring time; Recordings of Nigerian dance mixes can be 20-60minutes, computer hard drives are large enough to to store tracks that extend for weeks or months in length - so perhaps all my work is on the shorter side. Ive participated in drum circles that have gone on for days, but my recorded output is typically under 13minutes. Ive been a fan of microtracks since listening to the Residents Commercial album, the Minute Mens Double Nickles on the Dime, and various DJ mix sets.

At the time I recorded Anatomy I was listening to a lot of Dancehall mix tapes where the DJ would play the hook, a verse and the hook again before cutting to the next song. I also had been recently impressed by catching DJ Godfather live at one of the early Detroit techno festivals. He slammed on cut after cut as fast as his hands could move, without bothering to match beats whatsoever. It was impressive.

My second set of "The Anatomy of Prince Charming" Microcuts were highly influenced by grime.

I had some early club mixes and I loved the beats. Grime beats had many features that I enjoyed like nice 2step UKG influenced drums that had a carribean pueto rican salsa influenced broken beat gallop to them. Grime cuts had sub bass reggae basslines, and many cuts had an accent on the offbeat like ska - as some one who started out playing in ska bands I was feeling it.

I also was feeling the grime cuts with half time hip hop type beats; these cuts had very stiff swing so they could be mixed with double time club tracks. In the early 90s I bought a SR-16 drum machine with an awesome swing feature; it sounded natural. Many people thought I had a live drummer on my demos. At the time, I wondered why mainstream pop had such stiff and synthetic sounding drum programming. A couple years later I was listening to an art rock back and the drummer was deliberately immitating the stiff swing of 80s drum machines. It sounded very agressive and awesome.

When I listened to the stiff swing of grime beats, it reminded me of 80s drum programming on mid eighties minimal house, techno and electro cuts played by Jeff Mills when he was a DJ on WJLB and called himself "The Wizard"

At around the same time I was listening to grime I was also bumping southern Krunk music. You can hear the Krunk influence in the high hat style and the textures of the synth tracks.

On some of the Microtracks I would do a sampledelic mix, and a krunk mix. I wanted to trick out everything and do a third mix of each track with indy rock arrangements but I ended up moving and picking up a music library gig that sucked a lot of my time.

I ended up rocking a set of progressive DNB tracks for the music libarary. I had to make everything "commercial" but its essentially a progression of the salsa fusion influenced style of DNB I was rocking for my Fantastic Voyage album. If you're a post professional - look for the DNB Quantum Tracks Library. I was rocking the tracks to please some one else so its not 1000% my style, but theres some good work.

Back to Anatomy of Prince Charming: Theres some frenetic DNB drum programming on some of the minicuts.

Back on "Symphonia Innamorato Celstium Revelationum" I had experimented with speeding up DNB to 240BPM and accenting it at 120 BPM; for Anatomy I continued with this style, speeding up progressive IDM DNB programming to 260-280bpm, and accenting it with 130-150bpm grime electro influenced beats.

THe sampledelic flava for these cuts was influenced by my new appreciation of the public library. WHen I moved back to LA I was unemployed for a while, and was hitting the the library. The library always has a great selection of random classical. I was also mixing in classic fantasty horror, sci fi and noir soundtracks from my collection.

Hmmm. you may also notice some post punk influences in the cuts, both in the samples and the synthes. I grew up playing post punk so I have a wealth of those styles.

All these tracks were hella dubbed out. No one was doing instrumental dubbed out grime at the time (that I knew of).. eventually it became a genre known as dubstep. My outsider dubstep/grime is unique due to my use of samples, my krunk influence, my early detroit techno/house infleunce, and etc.

The mixes are raw - wordsound digitial did not master the cuts (typically the final stage in recording where the cuts are compressed and re-EQed). To me, it sounds great raw, but Ive always been a fan of low fi raw field recordings, vintage recordings, punk recordings and etc.

While each miniaturize masterpiece can be enjoyed for 99 cents, I recommend you buy the whole album for $8.00 a savings of $35 - all the tinsy tracks sound great on shuffle. Its some of my best work.

Anatomy of Prince Charming - The World Unmasked (tracks 1-4)

"Anatomy of Prince Charming" is one of my personal favorite albums, and also one of the most slept on. I don't think music critics knew what to make of it. Other artists and musicians made a point of telling me it was a classic that surpassed Psychotropical Heatwave and Fantastic Voyage. The Parisian Anarchists loved it and played the whole album on their radio station. May the gods and demons smile upon them.

"The music you are about to hear is the result of the investigation into 5th century Coptic music manuscripts" Is the snippet that opens the album.

The first four tracks "The World Unmasked," "Aurum Potabile," "Mists Rise Over Still Pools," and "Waning Moon, I Tune the Lute" are part of series of sampledelic illbient dub tracks that mix layered soundscapes with fin de siecle classical, medieval classical, Avante Garde Classical, Indian and African classical, and Indian Snake Charming music. While electronic producers have been mining Indian music for a long time, I don't think they've scratched the surface.

I recommend downloading this entire album for 8 bucks. There are many micro tracks that sounds great on shuffle mode.

Around late 96 early 97 when I was living back in Detroit, one of my best high school friends had just commited suicide, so I didnt feel like going out very much. WHen I did go out I would hit places like Family Function that played hip hop and 80s RnB, or I'd hit Zoots on the abstract techno night. I didnt really hit St. Andrews or Motor too often. I was more into a low key scene.

I cant find any footage of those clubs on youtube... guess thats before everyone had video phones. Here's st. andrews though.

Psychotropical Heatwave had just dropped but all the gear I used to make it was borrowed. So I basically had to start from scratch building up a studio, which wasnt easy at the time. YOu couldnt just download bootleg cracks of the top music software from limewire or whatever kids do today. You had to buy hardware piece by piece.

One of the things I wanted to do on Psychotropical but I didnt quite perfect is mixing spacerock, techno, and hip hop. I tried playing around with samples from Hawkwind, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Magma and etc but it didnt really come together.

Hmmm, I may have already posted a blog on this but when I was recording the Orgasmo album, I was also experiementing with slowing down Electro cuts and rapping over them. This was before that chopped and screwed electro.

So I still had those ideas floating around in my brain when I stopped back in Detroit. I bought a cheap techno piece and started programming dub hop. The drum sounds were kind of weak but I loved working with the arpeggiator. -And the unit had sounds from some of my favorite techno electro cuts.

occasionally i would record on cassette four track and over load the bass and it would sound phat distorted and aggro like half step dub step.

Shortly after that I was trying to collaborate with Philosophy Major, one of my former high school aquaintences. He really hated the overloaded bass sound. But he had a grip of classic psyche analogue synth tricks he wanted to try out. So he remixed/dubbed-out a sets worth of the cuts that we titled "**** Czarz ov Marz" and eventually one of the beats ended up on Wordsounds Crooklyn Dub Consortium3 - "U lllik annog m'I edud hciR Dub" under the name Lovecraft Technologies. When I released the Lovecraft Technologies album with my former associate, some hardcore H.P. Lovecraft fanatics bought the CD just because it had Lovecraft in the title. Were they expecting some steamcore gaslight goth or infernal ragtime? I dontknow, but I felt sorry for them and was planning on rocking a follow up CD titled "Supernatural Horror in Dub." -but the collaboration imploded before the project got off the ground.

Right around that time I was talking with MC Paul Barman about rocking a collaboration. Barman has insane skills as an MC, and is a very entertaining performer if you can get past the standard superficial preconceptions about what an MC should look and sound like.

ANyhoo, the collab didnt happen then for various reasons, but a couple years later Paul calls and leaves a creepy voice mail - a rap called "Burnt Hand Permanent Fist." I guess he saw some one on the subway who was living a real life horror. Paul was inspired with dread, sympathy and revulsion. The rap was brilliant and reminded me of Throbbing Gristle's Hamburger Lady.

We talked, and MC Paul Barman said he was ready for "Supernatural Horror in Dub." I wasnt rocking Lovecraft Technologies anymore but I still loved the concept. In my brain "Supernatural Horror in Dub" meant - if ghosts from another planet listened to reggae, what would it sound like? It made me think of Hodgeson's Adrift on Haunted Seas or Nightlands, or nautical HP Lovecraft like Call of Cthulu. I immediately got to work on some evil abstract weird ass tracks. -Which MC Paul Barman liked. -But if you listen to any of his albums, you know that he likes HIP HOP. He doesnt really rap over alien ghost reggae. He was thinking about going after the snowboarder market at that time...

I think I described this track in a previous post back in August. The track is slowed down past the breaking point. The only thing holding the groove together is the sliding bass (influenced by various genres - goth, reggae, soweto jive etc.).

One of my friends used to take Kung Fu classes at the same Shoalin Temple as the Rza.

One time she called me out of the blue and told me that the Wu were going to show up for one of her Kung Fu demonstrations. She wanted to know if I would rock a custom track, but I had to turn it around within 24 hours.

She's kind of an alternative rocker chick, so I wanted to make a track that both she and the Wu Tan clan might feel. I typically work very slowly and can play around with a track for weeks or months at a time, so it was fun to cook something up in a couple hours.

The kicks are programmed but the hihats and snares are played in live to give the track both the power and agression of the rigid kicks, and the layed back organic feel of the loose snares and etc.

Im playing chords on a bass guitar, something I picked up from big black or the swans.

Im coloring the beat with Asian folk textures.

Around 95 or so, I lost track of MEK and CIRCUS and didnt realize that they kept the Shapeshifters going,

until some point in the late 90s when I started reading some coverage in graf magazines. I managed to track down Circus through Awol. And we talked about working together. I asked him what sort of beats he wanted and he mailed me a grip of Rob One's DJ mix tapes. Rob1 is a legend from L.A.s underground Hip Hop scene. He passed away in 2000.

Rather than sending Circus a chunky old school beat - what he obviously wanted. I got into the flow of Robs DJ sets - the way the beats changed up and flowed into each other. THe structure of the breakdowns and etc. I programmed a couple tracks that constantly changed up like some of the more complex sections of Robs mixes.

"Are You Lonesome Tonight, Violeta" is a simple stripped down dub hop cut with drums, reggae bass and effected guitar (added by Philosophy Major). The melodies and grooves are constantly changing following the general velocity and direction of Robs DJ mix in paralell but at an obscure distance.

Sabine In The Morning follows the same general relationship to Robs DJ sets but the flavor is a mix of illbient atmospherics, Asian folk flavor, and guitar embellishment. You can listen here:

Lovecraft Technologies: Lunar Megamix

Lunar Megamix (Featuring: Venusia DeSade) is the 17th track on the Lovecraft Technolies self titled CD. Lovecraft Technologies started as a short lived studio project with a guitar player friend and eventually morphed into a live hip hop crew.

THe Lovecraft Technologies CD is from the period when it was just the guitar player and myself.

Lunar Megamix (Featuring: Venusia DeSade) is 14minutes long house tempo instrumental track.

The beat changes up contratantly with new drum patterns blending in about every 10-20 seconds, it covers a variety of house and techno influences as well as other genres including styles of african latin and blues music played with an electronic music pallet.

THe guitar player used to be a hippie and brought a variety of folk jams he cultivated as a teenager. Most are played with samba picking style.

THe bass line and key line are stacked on the drums and follow the folk melodies. The guitar player and I collaborated on this part because he knew the chord progressions and I had more of an expertise in bass lines. THe key line is the same melody pitched up and played through an effected arpeggiated vintage keyboard.

The voices are dubbed spoken word by Seattle Fetish scenester Venusia DeSade.

THis track uses some of the same stylistic ingrediants as ukg (latin carribean influenced house programming) and uk Funky (african house with bass and keys stacked on the drums).

The constantly shifting beat, hippy guitar colorization, and dubbed surrealistic vocals give the cut a singular sound. Future roots styles and psyche electronic styles have become more popular in the years since this release but im not aware of anything that approaches the specific ambitions of this track.

Some time around 99 I bought a keyboard with some phat bass sounds that also had a grip of hilarious cheesey 80s synth tones. As a joke I rocked an 80s style track that sounded so hilariously good that I kept on going until I had full set. THe best four tracks ended up on Summer In Paradise. I had been hearing 80s revival since about 91, when I was in one of the backstage areas of the Limelight and found a bunch of Tranni's dancing to Rock the Casbah and other early 80s cuts.

During the 80s, every day after school, the local geto Detroit TV station, channel 62, used to play a new wave dance show called MV3 broadcast out Los Angeles. It mixed videos with an American Band Stand dance party. It was followed by The Scene, a Detroit local Soul Train style dance show. Eventually the Scene was replaced by The New Dance show with a more Techno influenced style. As Ive described in previous blogs, in Detroit there was a big cross over between New Wave and Funk. The local Urban station's most popular prime time DJ would rock sets of Devo, and Thomas Dolby. The New Wave station would play Prince and Kool Moe Dee.

Around that time I would buy new wave records and even DJ'd some dances at my highschool. So my 80s style cuts are based on a deep knowledge of real New Wave disco electro funk.

One of the first things you might notice is that the track is very raw. Its overloaded and distorted, aggressive and punky. This is to counterbalance the over the top cheesey sugar pop quality of the melodies. Im rocking about three hooks at any given time. If you listen to the disco funk bass playing (beyond the punk agressive tonal quality) you may notice the influence of reggae grooves.

2. I Want You, I Need You, I Love You, Selena

This track was getting some airplay from John Peel when it came out. It features an asynchronous panning of the bass line which is rare in dance music for several reasons. Its somthing I probably picked up from Throbbing Gristle or Temple ov Psychic Youth.

I had British raver contact me who wanted to use this track on one of her films. She said it reminded her of the British raver summer of love (which was 88?) I thought it was a nice compliment.

I guess I was influenced by those old rave acid house tunes

"Don't be Cruel Anastasia" is the last cut on Summer in Paradise, an album I released on the Lovecraft Technologies label around 00. I had been sitting on some tracks that we're really Wordsound material.

"Don't be Cruel Anastasia" was one of my more popular cuts from the Psychotropical Heatwave sessions. When I played Psychotropical Heatwave for my LA or Detroit fam, this was always the fave or one of the most appreciated - but wordsound rejected it. When I did psychotropical, hip hop was still sample based. I had the idea that if the genre of funk or hip hop could be sample based, why not other genres?

"Don't be Cruel Anastasia" is a mix of Punk, first and second wave Ska, 50s RnB, 50s NYC RocknRoll, southern rockabilly, 60s surf rock, and vintage country.

The song title comes from the type of psychotronic, amok books, vintage sci-fi beat poetry inspired rap lyrics i was rocking at the time.

Is the second from last song on my first Wordsound album Psychotropical Heatwave. Its one of my early tascam cassette four track experiments. The sounds are from the jacked up Emax II used by orgasmo. The whole cut is three samples. Its a vintage Brasilian drumming sample and a couple kiddie record sounds. The vintage Brasilian drumming sample is slowed down and sounds like samba reggae, but the drumming style is from the late 50s or early 60s.

My interest in mixing latin music with hip hop in the early 90s comes from my experience with drumming parties, my love of kitch exotica and world music, and the growing popularity of latin hip hop in the 80s and early 90s(from mantronix and schooly d to cypress hill and kid frost) and etc. Also Japanese Acid jazz which had a kitchy lounge brasilian influence. I liked the name acid jazz but was disappointed it just meant pop lounge jazz mixed with dance beats.

Psychotropical Heatwave: Eating Sweetheart Valentine Candygram Vertebrae

"Eating Sweetheart Valentine Candygram Vertebrae" is the fifth track on my First Wordsound release. The title is a transgressive beatnik sci fi wordplay with dated kitch 50s consumerized plastic romance.

I rocked a primitive cassette 4 track version of this cut with the singer from the Christian Death spin off group EXP. She did an awesome vocal about a traditional gypsy recipe for cooking hedgehog, where they insert a straw up the hedgehogs nether regions and inflate it like a balloon before roasting it over a fire. Unfortunately that version was lost.

This new version is also a collaboration with an EXP member, Brian Calrson who provided steele cello tones. Its a custom made instrument, but here's what they roughtly look like.

"A Flickering Celluloid Moonbeam on the View Screen" is the 4th song on my first wordsound release.

The title is nod to vintage sci fi, cinema, and classic romantic mood music liner notes.

"A Flickering Celluloid Moonbeam on the View Screen" is one of my favorite cuts on Psychotropical Heatwave. It has more samples than you'd typically hear in 10 hip hop cuts, and a creative style like no other. I would hold it up against any of the cuts AMG claims are the best Illbient cuts or albums fomr the genre. Download a copy on Itunes or better yet get the full uncompressed audio on CD. It sounds better. I swear.

The track is basically my take on exotica. There is a perenial exotica Tiki scene in Los Angeles due to a historical presence of post ww2 tiki themed lounges and apartment complexes, pacific surf culture, and etc. THe scene has cross over with the garage rock crowd. And in the Early 90s I lived in Los Feliz where Mondo Video the Dresden Lounge, the Derby, Jumbos Clown Room, Amok books and X-Large were all part of the same neighborhood. So there was cross over between the vintage hipster scene and the hip hop graf scene.

As ingrediants for the track, Im mixing vintage late 50s, early 60s jazz, vintage nyc caberet pop, vintage latin beats, vintage sci fi, vintage field recordings from an indian demon festival and an australian aboriginal occult ceremony. boiled down to a rugged early 90s hip hop beat. Jazzy noirish tones and phat bass were popular at the time.

Here's a rough impression of the style ingrediants im mixing. Im not getting too close to the actual sounds - just a rough ballpark idea of the formula.

THe beat is mix of Krump Battle track and Half-step (dubstep) laced with Detroit style grunge psyche (stooges and etc). I added Chicago style alterna RnB keys for the chorus.

Amara free-styled the vocal in the studio and I dubbed out the results. The last time I spoke with Amara she was kicking it with the Scientist (the dub legend) who now lives here in L.A.. Amara owns a Echo Park clothing boutique called Haute Olive.

PSYCHOTROPICAL HEATWAVE

In a previous post I gave a vague description of my life on the Zorthian ranch. While I was living in the primitive ranch conditions and recording muddy lo-fi psycho hop, I was working at a video game company rocking sound design in a cutting edge digital studio.

After graduating from NYU films school and moving to LA, I had been working various industry jobs, set work, assisting to the head of long form video production at Atlantic records and etc. ANd I was pitching projects around town. I almost got a couple shows set up at MTV when my partner, a trusted friends from my NYU school days tried to leverage me out of my own deal using a fake silent partner. I dont know what that means either but when I described the circumstances to industry vets, they recognized the b.s. business kung fu right away. It was a low blow, so I decided to take a break from trying to set up shows and pursue my music interests for a while.

I had a day to day gig as a runner at a special effects house. It was a foot in the door and I was scheming on what department I wanted to get in. Motion control camera? physical effects? Pyro? 3-D Animation? I decided on the composer. He seemed like a cool character, and had a lot of nice toys in his studio.

the days of digital mixing were still kind of new. I worked my way up to rocking sound design on a pro tools set up - it was similar to digital mixing I had done at NYU's Gradtuate Interactive telecommunications Program. My boss, Mars, did his sound design using the sequencer Cubase. It was twice as fast as protools due to power keys... Mars agreed to train me.

Mars had been the factory rep at Fairlight, the company that manufactured the first sampling work station. So Mars had been flown around the world training the top keyboard players of the late 70s early 80s. I dont know all the guys he taught but whenever I brought up a name, he knew them... I remember names like: Herbie Hancock, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Kate Bush, Kieth Emerson, Trevor Horn etc. but theres a much longer list on wikipedia which is probly more accurate. I think Mars had apprenticed under Hans Zimmer in composing work. He had produced/programmed Crazy for Seal. etc.

After working on a few games it became clear that the video game company was being run by a character, and was going through some instability. Mars bolted and I followed along. He was producing a pop album and I was sitting next to him in the studio learning as much as I could and schooling him on what I thought was hip (as a 24 year old). He was trying to put together software company that specialized in music libary production. We made a deal where I would write a business prosposal for his company and he would produce a demo for me. I wrote the proposal but he was slammed in production, and had no time to fulfill his side of the agreement. Instead he let me use a second workstation to record my album Psychotropical Heatwave. Which is why that album sounds fat. It was recorded with 20 times the production value of my other albums.

My original goal was to rap over the tracks. I wanted to do a slick melodic double time flow like the bone thugs which were popular at the time. Thats why my beats are slower. I was hoping to get a vocal producer to help me pull it off. But at the time the idea of a white rapper was laughed at by industry heads.

I sent around hella cassettes of the demo, and got mad responses from various labels. They told me that the album was dub (I didnt know that, I thought it was slow hip hop...). It got airplay from satalite dub radio from Germany and from KCRW in LA, some Chicago station. etc. One of the DJs doubled as a Dreamworks A&R and was surprised that I was in my early 20s instead of my 30s. I guess most 20 year olds werent into mixing French Caberet, pygmy water drumming and Kraut rock at that time. I met with the head of A&R at Dreamworks for breakfast, they were gassing me hard, about releasing my work and producing their artists. I also got a call from WOrdsound who were completely unknown at that time. FOr some reason I lost faith in Dreamworks, they were too vague, and based on my experience at Atlantic, I knew that Majors would have rosters of 20 artists and only push 1 or two - leaving the rest out in the cold. I didnt want to get treated like that. WOrdsound had Prince Paula nd Bill Laswell on the roster, so I was geeked to get my album out...

It started as a minimal jazzy bossa nova beat with eerie horror sci fi accents. Mars's wife really liked it - she was recording a solo album. I cant remember the specifics but I gave it to her. I think she liked that it was more minimal than Mars's typical orchestral extravaganzas. Of course when Mars got his hands on it, he wanted to blow it up and asked for more of my crazy samples. Eventually the track made it back to my hands, with all this Mars work on it.

I was into 50s extoica at the time so I really appreciated the lounge stylings Mars had added. Mars had been telling me stories about his Dickensian childhood. If i remember right ( I could be making this all up) Mars had an evil step father that may have murdered his autistic brother by pushing him off a cliff, and he made Mars practice piano with bricks on top of his hands. When Mars hit puberty, he ran away from home and worked as a lounge pianist while touring the south Pacific. this is a perfect exotica bio, if you asked me...

The title "Stroboscopic Searchlites Sweep Tidepools of Parasites" is from the type of rap lyrics I was writing at the time, influenced by WS Burroughs and 1950s Men's Magazines I would buy in Detroit Flea Markets.

Orgasmo ALL FK'd UP/CAVALCADE OF THUGS

Im going to finish up describing my first release in a single post. It was released in 1994. There was no real hip hop underground at the time. Im not sure how many lo fi, noisy meta hip hop artists have dropped. Sensational from Wordsound is probly the most famous. Five Starcel Men http://www.myspace.com/fivestarclemen were dope until I think the main dude suicided. Hawd Gankstuh Rappah Emcees Wid Gatz did a couple nice releases. the HGR evolved from the same cypher (I brought their demo to Wordsound). But Im sure there are many more...

This album was released right about the time Orgasmo was calling it quits. Slippy and I were drifting apart - we had some bad vibe about a chick. I sent the LP around to radio stations and the press. The Iconic L.A. punk zine FLipside gave the album an epic review. Maximum ROckinroll trashed the album. The ROcket (Seattle's 90s grunge era rock newspaper) loved it and wrote a feature.

When my first PRINCE CHARMING solo album PSYCHOTROPICAL HEATWAVE came out on Wordsound, I decided to use the remaining copies of the ORGASMO/Cavalcade LPs as promo copies. I started writing "33 or 45 RPM" on the label bombing hip stores around town. About that time I city hopped, from LA to Chicago to Detroit. Each city got hit. Every once in a while stray copies end up on the internet. Ive seen them for $5 - but Ive talked to Shapeshifter or HGR collectors would pay 10 times that price to get ultra rare copies. Dont ask me...

Hmmm. None of those definitions hit the mark. Dutch Wife is also vintage nautical jargon for a personal malthusianism deviced carved out of wood. Sailors would wear them as necklaces.

SLippy from Orgasmo wrote and performed this zepplinesque bluegrassy stomp over one of my drum loops. Slippy has very informed refined and rarified taste in things like music. So reducing the music to Zepplin is a shot in the dark. Ask him yourself for a more informed scoop. THe talking blues vocal is a nice style of proto rap.

SIDE B: CAVALCADE OF THUGS

"CAVALCADE OF THUGS".. The name is a reference to the vintage "Cavalcade of Hits" radio program (similar to "hit parade").. Slippy and I decided to split the LP with a comp for side 2. The comp was a way to provide context for our work - since there was no underground hip hop genre at the time. I had wanted to start a label back in high school which never went down. All my friends had dope demos - back before computers everything was recorded on cassette four tracks. unless a kid was rich and had a recording studio set up. I thought it would be dope to release a grip of my friends music. I didnt ask permission, I just did it. A lot of kids would brag about doing this and that and they were just gassing. I didnt want to be like that. I figured, everyone was trying to get up so, who would complain. All the tracks sounded like hits to me so I thought they could blow up. That was before I knew about all the modern styles of payola that dominated the industry back then.

SIDE B: CAVALCADE OF THUGS: ASS TOAST

This track is probly the strongest cut on the album.

ASS TOAST was a stylistic step in between the O.G. ShapeShifters and the Hawd Gankstuh Rapper Emcees Wid Gatz.

THe O.G. LA Shapeshifters we're true school when I met them. Meaning that they were all serious B-Boys. A couple of them were legends in the LA graf scene (SER had cred as the first freeway writer, and Relm brought some NYC styles to LA). They had all the elements of Hip Hop down, breaking, djing, freestyling, graf etc. They spent time in nyc and la, they kept it real, pure hip hop...

I was part of the cypher for a while. and I would do all these crazy weird raps about picking up hitch hikers and giving them wedgies and stuff like that - they would laugh.... but wouldnt invite me to drop verses on their tracks - just basslines. The Shapeshifters would flex other ways - freestyling with extended metaphores, obscure old school flows and etc.

Until... RELM and SER visited NYC and recorded with REAS

Aparantly Reas had a similar style to mine (or heard my stuff, I have no idea). But he recorded a track with the shapeshifters and rocked crazy psycho goofy stuff - it was a contrast to the more standard Shapeshifter verses RELM and SER spit. after that it was on... and they recorded a few cuts as ASSTOAST. this one was the best.

the "loving you is easy cuz its beautiful" joke was later immitated in an episode of "SOuth Park." After All Fkd Up/Cavalcade of Thugs was released - I saw an ad in a magazine for an album called ORGASMO on the Dust Brothers Nicklebag records and asked them what was up... rap and punk from within the same 1 mile radius neighborhood. WTF? They said it was for a sound track and the movie was changing its name to Orgazmo. I dont know if the southpark dudes had a grudge after that or they just stole the joke. But I would be surprised if they didnt hear the cut... it would be one hell of a coincedence.

SIDE B: CAVALCADE OF THUGS: TOM GEMP

Back in Detroit, one of my favorite neighborhood bands was called Tom Gemp. They were a proto grunge punk art rock psyche band. Two 4 piece garage bands called the Dirty Whites and Dharma Bums came together to form a chaotic 8 piece band with two drummer, two singers and etc. One of my people recorded a couple demos for them in a basement studio, and they were hot. I was suprised that they were never released or got up more. I think they were too arty or psyche for most punkers.

THis cut is the Shapeshifters first release. ROb1 Mek Ser Relm Perk. Before Circus joined the crew and took things to another level.

I think its a Mek SP12 beat blended with a live drum track from a break beat record. The live drum performance plays through the entire cut giving it a unique flav. Nice old school flows from some of the big L.A. writers from that era.

Ocean of Power is based on the interplay of two bossa nova beats; one at 120 BPM the other at 60 BPM. The Bossa Nova beats are cut in and out, mixed off beat, using an abstract techno turntablist technique. As I described in my previous blogs, This album was recorded right after Fantastic Voyage; so im exploring similar territories - substituting longer drum performances instead of 1 or 2 bar break beats. Playing with the contrast of various half time and double time syncopations. The live drums on Ocean of Powerare chaotic effected phased etc. In much of my work I try to apply my freestyle jam aesthetic to programming; I attempt the sort of creative chaos I might hope to hear from live 80s art rock electronics jams from Hula, Cabaret Voltaire, Severed Heads, SKinny Puppy etc. Or experimental 70s dub, early psych/prog/kraut rock jams and etc. To glue it all together Im using a 240 BPM techno hi hat porta pan spread as a shimmering grid. ANd a half time minor metallic techno Drone, to give it a deep heavy foundation. The verbed out arpeggiated accoustic guitar on Ocean of Power was provided by Philosophy Major.

Ocean of Power was a sketch pad that became the basis for a "Have You Ever Kissed a Nuclear Physicist? " one of my fave miniaturized masterpieces displayed on Anatomy of Prince Charming... It also was the foundation for the PM rock anthem "Dance in the Circles of Light" on the LoveCraft Technologies CD.

In the book Heavy Metal Islam, Mark LeVine, the author says that in the middle east hip hop is more popular than metal, because all you need is a cell phone/ring tone to start a rap cypher. Amps and nice equiptment are expensive. On myspace, there are more Hip Hip artists than any other genre...

In my previous blogs about Seattle, I descibe starting a live dub hop noise band and how it evolved (devolved?) into a misfit hip hop crew... why?

basically we discovered that rapping over beats was a better plan - its more accessable, more mobile, and easier to pull off. You dont have to worry about lugging heavy equiptment around and having it beat up or stolen. You dont have to worry about half deaf amatuer sound men wreck your mix. (Local PAs have a hard enough time mixing 2 tracks - a backing track and mic.)

I love rap. I'm a huge fan of poetry from ancient babylon (a Lament for UR) to beatnik jazz poetry, and everyone in between. I love spoken word poetry. Performance poetry. Lyrical poetry. Ancient Egyptian love poems, Roman Satires, symbolist, Romantic, structuralist and etc.

If you read Satyricon an ancient roman novel (satire/picaresque) you will see that poets have been shunned since ancient time. Yet many modern poets despise rap. DJs hate rap. Indy Rockers hate rap. etc etc Isnt rap poetry? Isnt most modern dance music heavily influenced and/or derrived form hip hop? Isnt ROcknROll evolved from the same roots as rap?

One reason to hate rap - a typical rap lyric is at least 3 times longer than a song lyric. If the MC sux, its 3 times more obvious. The main reason why most MCs suck is that they have bad taste and are influenced by other sucky MCs. Or theyre not really artists or poets, they just want to get rich and famous. Or they have a really big mouth and cant shut up. The default cliche for rap is a coked up imbecile bragging about how great they are.

Mainstream rap has very strict conservative rules. However, B-Boying and hip hop have another set of rules. You can get respect for being original and inventing styles. Thats how grafitti and breakdancing evolved into extremes. As a music technology and a poetry technology, rap is very powerful and advanced. Its the intersection of many cadances and musical grooves.

Musicians who learn how to rap can write complex vocal melodies. Poets can modernize and turbo charge the meters at their disposal.

If rappers realize the context of their art within music and poetry they would have a much wider pallet of subject matter and voices at their disposal. They could write epic story raps 5 hours long. Any technique thats been covered by writing or music would suddenly be game...

okay thats my rant.

Heres how my crew would operate. We would practice flowing over all styles of music. ANYTHING. All tempos. All grooves. this was easier for the musicians who knew how to groove various beats. but all it takes is practice.

Practicing is bullshit anyways. Theres not better practice than rocking a show. SO aside from the gigs we booked and promoted, we were getting up as mushc as possible. A graf writer may have a gallery show, but that doesnt meant they wont go out at night and bomb a freeway.

In my blog about ORGASMO, I described how we would hit open mics. Thats where we started bombing mics in Seattle too. We hit poetry readings too. We had dope lyrics and I would freestyle Timothy Leary style guided meditations/visualizations to introduce/hype our shows. I would some times use a voice imitating Prince Buster or the various Tourists shows I caught travelling (the great pyramids of Giza, or Ankor, or Khajaraho)... WHen I participated in the Shapeshifters ciphers, one of the games we would play would be coming up with funny cartoon voices. like the rapping john wayne novelty hit. Im glad its something that carried over to the shapeshifters 2.0 (Farmers Market of the Beasts - where they imitate animal voices)... One of the things I like about jamaican dancehall styles are the funny voices and melodic raps. another rant... back to the story:

We would hit kareoki bars -they always had the best vocal mixes. Rap is similar to kareoki - just a backing track and a mic. kareoki bars typically have old rap hits and 70s southern rock works too. Big ups LA Lounge in the ID.

We would play dounbek and rock cyphers in the street in front of hip hop shows. We entered rap battles and ignored the battle rules - just did our own thing when we got the mic. If a touring rap act like the Bootcamp Click asked if any MCs were in teh audience, we would get up.

If the Hari Krishnas or a chinese new years parade passed us, we would get up, and start rapping over their drums and gongs.

If we hit a bar or a club, we always hit up the DJ and asked to get on the mic. Most of the time they say no, or they didnt have a mic... thats why we always brought our own mic. If a DJ said no, that meant we had to freestyle until they heard we were good, and not going to wreck their vibe. We rocked the mic on drum and bass nights, digital hardcore, breakbeat, house, IDM, electroclash.

THe best gorilla show we did was a fashion show where the entire audience was photographers and models.

We also discovered that if we walked up to most rock bands and asked to rap over a song they would agree, rockabilly, prog rock. If a band is good or confident they dont mind sharing the mic for a cut or two. I've even walked up to speed death metal bands and just grabbed the mic.

The crew was non-hierarchical, non-exclusive. I encouraged people to branch out and work with as many people as possible. I thought that would keep beef and ego problems to a minimum. Open up more possiblities.

Everything was cool until some of the fam started acting shady. I wasnt down. I cut out and started DJing a black book grafitti "doodling" event at heavens records. But thats another story.

There's an old puritan saying: "Speak of the Devil and he will com scratching at your door." So if you are all superstitious, pause for reflection before you summon forth this accursed video.

Back in Seattle, I thought I had made up the word Demonomania by perverting "Monomania," but alas its a well worn concept used by Catholic witch-hunters. According to orthodox Catholic scholars, fallen angels are still angels, and are thus higher beings than humans .... they theorize that humans would bennefit from amorous relations with incubi and succubi. DANCES OF DEMONOMANIA is in the tradition of my surrealist fad dances: prince-charming.net "recommended dance steps", and myspace.com/princecharming "Latest Martian Mambos." Also punk anti dancing (simulated siezures and etc) that you might see in videos by Devo or Talking Heads in the early 80s.

Theres a religious tradition going back to stone age shamanism that links demonic/spiritual posession and dance.

Instead, I'm referencing a variety of movements from, afro-cuban, krump, punk rawk, bhangra, african, dancehall and swing. I'm some one who dances for fun rather than show, so I did my best. Marguerite also did a nice job with the Migrane, felid and attacked by bees movements.

We shot part of DANCES OF DEMONOMANIA in Griffith Park after a 1000 foot wall of fire decorated the trees. A coyote sat and watched the performance - you can see it in the back ground sitting on a stump in some of the shots.

The title "Whirling Electrons Oscillating in the Sunless Deep" is a Lovecraftian reference to the horror of deep space. Infinity. The Abyss. Its also a loose reference to futurism, romantic nocturn and the occult - HP Blavatsy when she decribes the Universe as the "Cosmic rotation of matter."

THe track is based on a central American shuffle pattern that is shared with west coast g-funk. The Kick roll is the latin funk influence by way of Cypress Hills first album. At least thats how I remember it. Maybe its grindcore. There are strict rules for true school hip hop heads - your kick and snare choices are limited. But if you peel back one layer, you can approach hip hop as another style of funk. The rules are looser - you can draw on the deep history and wide influence of funk.

The bass line for "Whirling Electrons Oscillating in the Sunless Deep" is Reggaeton influenced, and gives the track sort of a cumbia groove. Ive appreciated distorted bass for a while. For industrial electropunk/grindcore noise jams I would play distorted chords with my bass guitar, or melodies influenced by new order. Programming techno, I used to over load bass channels on down tempo dub tracks and get a nice buzzy low end similar to what is now called dubstep. Dub step bass is typically a sub layered with higher pitched synth. On "Whirling Electrons Oscillating in the Sunless Deep" Im layering a sub bass with a couple distortion settings that im alternating for a call and response pattern. The bass groove is emphasized by the decending string melody.

One of the things I like about reggaeton is that theyre not afraid to use rave/trance/hardcore synth settings. It gives the genre more cross over potential Raverton and etc. On "Whirling Electrons Oscillating in the Sunless Deep" Im playing a double time latin shuffle techno arpeggiation to give the chorus an evil boost.

The double-time hi hat pattern is another unique feature of the track. Its more of a swing bebop pattern than straight ticking pulse typical of MPC hip hop. The agitated hi hats add to the tracks wild energy. Its a nice counter balance to the metronome marching shuffle.

The album title is a reference to the work of hildegard von bingen(Christian mystic, German Benedictine abbess, author, counselor, linguist, naturalist, scientist, philosopher, physician, herbalist, poet, channeller, visionary, composer, and polymath). Who I admire because of her awesome music, her religious (psychotic?) "visions" and the alphabet she invented. Very ambitious, no?

Again this album was recorded in a short period right after I finished Fantastic Voyage. I was still playing with many FV concepts. Pushing them to further extremes.

The title "Monstruwacan Jamboree" was influenced by "The Night Land," 1912 one of my favorite books by William Hope Hodgson. The book mixes a bizarre pulp action adventure sci fi plot, with some of the best romantic nocturn poetry ever written.

H. P. Lovecraft's essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" describes the novel as "one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written". Clark Ashton Smith wrote of it that "In all literature, there are few works so sheerly remarkable, so purely creative, as The Night Land. Whatever faults this book may possess, however inordinate its length may seem, it impresses the reader as being the ultimate saga of a perishing cosmos, the last epic of a world beleaguered by eternal night and by the unvisageable spawn of darkness. Only a great poet could have conceived and written this story; and it is perhaps not illegitimate to wonder how much of actual prophecy may have been mingled with the poesy."

All the tracks included in "Symphonia Innamorato Celstium Revelationum" are at 120 bpm the classic disco house tempo. As with my album Fantastic Voyage I was playing with using longer jazz drum solos and other longer performances in the place of 1bar break beats. I was also continuing my experiments with mixing various half time and double time beats. "Monstruwacan Jamboree" mixes layers of longer drum performances played at 120 and 240 BPM. Theres also a layer of techno drums to keep a steady momentum.

At times I throw in a live hip hop influenced kick snare pattern at 60 bpm (a reggae tempo). The snare is extended with delay effects, giving it a dub groove. I discovered the work of Dub Pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry while listening to Bob Marley as a 13 year old. Perry co-wrote many of Marley's classics and produced my favorite era of Marley's work. Lee Perry is one of the more creative reggae producers of the 70s - at one his extremes, his work can sound like a room with 1000 ping pong balls bouncing around in time to the music.

The wild avant bebopesque drums are laced with some rubbery acid-house textures. Giving it what I felt was a vintage sci fi feel. I also brought in Philosophy Major with a few guitar chords. An african jazz/funk progression and garage rock flav. I suppose you can feel the influence of Sun Ra and jazz infleunced 60s psyche like Capatin Beefheart or Soft Machine.

I rocked this beat in just a couple hours. Everytime I create a track I try to bring a few fresh ideas or innovations. I like to change up my gear, software, sequencer and etc to get new ideas. Having time pressure adds another factor x, that allows for a fresh approach and interesting results.

For this track I started with a library doumbek beat. It had a really nice EQ and a consistent tempo. My own dounbek playing is much more chaotic, I like salsa fusion/swing jazz influenced grooves based in 3. I drop beats. I throw in thumb slaps I picked up from bass playing, I throw in backhanded slaps and finger rolls I picked up from Flamenco guitar, I throw in finger rolls I picked up from Persian Toumbek playing. At a Womad music festival I caught a family of persian master percussionists that blew me away with their complex drum grooves. They had an amazing mix and thebass notes sounded like 808 kicks. Unfortunately I dont have that mic/eq technology in my apartment studio. So in this case I used a conservative but nice sounding library track.

I accented the beat with drum machine kicks and snares, played in live. I like to play with various quantizations and swings. A live drum is going to have a differant feel than a programmed drum. A looped 2 bar live performance is going to have a differant feel than a completely live performance. Back in the golden age of Hip Hop, some producers used to scratch in the snare to give tracks a slightly more laid back (funkier groove.) etc.

The simple melodic bell melody is influenced by Bollywood film music. They have some of the sweetest EZ listening melodies. I like harsh and abbrasive aggro textures, and I also enjoy sweet soothing melodies and tones. Sometimes I like to mix the two together. A balance of the two allows you to go further in both directions and still be palatable. Like a balance of sweet and hot spices when cooking thai food. Some of the samples were edited by Philosophy Major.

The track is rooted as exotica by the Martin Denny influenced 1950s lounge piano chords.

The track title "Dawn of Good Luck" is a reference to the Japanese goddess of rejuvination.

At the time I recorded this music I had just finished one stage of my life and had recharged my battery by going on a big trip.

I was still working with the 1970s Bollywood arrangement style that influenced "Good 4 Me Bad 4 Demons." Some music journalists like DJ Recloose have compared my music to DJ Shadow, which is flattering. However, though we may share influences(?), any other similarities would be superficial. I believe Shadow said that his inspiration for his early work (what UK journalists labelled trip hop) came from the Organized Confusion track Hypnotical Gases, which is a dope track. My inspiration for contstantly changing beats up comes mostly from vintage Bollywood cassettes that I started collection in NYC, while at NYU Film school. THey were $2 each, and had an album on each side, SO I assumed they were bootlegs... until I got to India and discovered that they have a unique music distribution system; they sell music stores a master cassette and a bunch of labels; each music shop dubs off thier own copies, keeping costs down. In the 70s some Indian film composers would have elaborate compositions that might repeat the same melody but radically change the arrangement every 8 bars. THey might have bells play the melody line, then strings, then guitare, then singing etc etc etc. I'm also influence by detroit geto tech mixes where the DJ slams on new beats, swaping out records as fast as possible, just playing the hook. & Im sure the creative medleys on Beatles records I listed to as a kid had an impact, as well as fast paced ADD childrens shows like the electric company.

For "Dawn of Good Luck" I took the structured 8 bar music changes of "Good 4 Me Bad 4 Demons" one step further; I changed both the beat and the music every 8 bars.

The beat programming on this track is relatively unique. I had picked up some tabla skills in Varanasi, where you can get a 1 on 1 music lesson from a master musician for about $1 per hour. Basic Tabla technique and composition had an interesting influence on my beat science. I had also jammed with street musicians in Barcelona and picked up some styles absorbing Flamenco music in Sevilla, and folk performers in Marakesh. Hmmm. THeres also a strong central american cumbia influence to the beats as well.

When I added music to the beats, I was keeping things minimal; Typically I only added a couple sounds to each section. It gave the track a lighter tone than "Good 4 Me Bad 4 Demons." some of the samples were edited by philosophy major.

Both tracks turned out good and have been used in fashion shows. Fashionistas seem to appreciate the colorful carnival of sounds, the energy, the structure and etc.

"Good 4 Me, Bad for Demons" is the name of a sword from Hawaiian legend. I learned about it from King David Kalakaua aka The Merrie Monarch aka the last reigning king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi in his difinitive book "The Legends and Myths of Hawaii."
A nice resouce for info on underwater cave demons, shark demons, squid demons, and surfing. Im a fan of hawaiian slack key guitare and pacific drumming, but this track has a wider scope, incorporating sounds from around the world.

The track itself is based on a Bollywood structure. The underlying hip hop drum machine pattern is consistant but every 8 bars I change up the music. I added many heavy excotic accoustic drum sounds, bass guitar, synthes, and vintage classical samples. Listening to the track now, I can hear a strong Sly & Robbie/Black Uhuru influence on the grooves. I made this track right after coming from a long trip so I include field recordings from an Uganda Primate reserve, the Burning Ghat at Varanasi, and the end has some nice bat sounds from those tantric temples in khajaraho.

I think the momentum from my trip carried over to the track and it has a nice travelling vibe. Like youre visiting exotic lands in search of adventure.

This track was a free bonus track I included as part of the WORDSOUND DIGITAL album THE ANATOMY OF PRINCE CHARMING. The tracks on that album are very raw. I didnt expect to have another release ever, so I was making a very personal album for my own amusement.

I think I described the genesis of my early 90s L.A. punk hip hop band ORGAMSO in a previous blog about the Zorthian ranch(?). Anyhoo, heres a quick recap:

I was jamming with Slippy the Dark Greasy Hog Humping Hobbit for about a year, and we had never bothered to write songs. I got sick of sitting around the practice space and threatened that unless we wrote 15 songs that night and started playing gigs every night that I was too bored to continue. So we wrote a bunch of "songs" which were basically loose jams with one or two planned hooks and we started hitting open mic nights.

I think the first place we hit was Pasadena's E-bar, which was the epicenter of Pasadena's hipster art scene at the time. Im not sure how long the e-bar had been around (1970s?) but it pre-dated the starbucks explosion by decades. espresso was an unknown exotic comodity that had a small fad in post WW2 beatnik culture.

Pasadena was still a nasty bombed out ghetto looking place. Before it was re-gentrified and became something like Beverly Hills or a giant Mall. The E-bar had a back alley entrance and had an open mic night.

We did our thing. The owner started handing out napkins to patrons to stuff in their ears. Other people moved across the street and listened from on top of a parking garage. They said it sounded like an attack of angry bats from all the feedback. One of the managers came up and asked if we needed any groupies. It was a success.

We proceeded to hit every open mic in LA we could find. Most of them were run by hippies (like this guy dressed like a wizard I remember in the west valley) who tried to be open minded but really despised hip hop and drum machines.

We did this gig at a strip mall coffee nook in the valley on mothers day. By that point we realized to do a sound check with our volume knobs set on 1. The sound person without fail would always turn us down right away. If we started on 1, and the sound person turned us down, we could always turn up to 2, doubling our volume. It was always a volume war. The mothers day crowd were there to humor their singer song writer sons and daughter and weren’t expecting drum machine thrash beats with some one yelling "RICH DUUUDE IM GONNA FUCKING KIIIIILLLL YOU!!!!"

Open mic nights suck in general. You have to wait like 2 hours to play 2 or 3 songs to an audience that hates you. In the mean time Slippy would always find a nearby bar and get wasted. So when we got up he would be jumping or stumbling around the stage, or falling off the stage, which was frequent.

We tried to bring in some hippie djimbe players from the ranch but Slippy humped this guys hippie GF during the show, right in front of they guy.. they didn’t come back.

Another time we did a show in Hollywood at a place called Highland ground. One of the other open mic bands, who had previously caught our act warned the organizers that we were going to do a noise jam. When the organizer approached us, we played stupid. "You want us to do a noise jam? We could try… Why do you want us to do a noise jam?" and etc. There was a Nick Cave rip off band, and some space rock guy jamming with an actual bongo player. When we performed, we had time to prepare with acoustic gtrs. We did a hard rock metal riff then shouted our name ORGASMO! then we played the same metal riff and shouted our name ORGASMO! we kept repeating it over and over and over, playing the same metal riff and then shouting ORGASMO! until they eventually turned the power off and started yelling at us. The performance was funny, then annoying, then funny again, then annoying again, then funny again, then annoying, then they started attacking us and wrestling us off stage. A friend of mine asked the manager of Highland Grounds about it years later and they still remembered. It was the only time something like that happened.

At another open mic at the E-bar, we were chilling with the owner in the back room after the performance. The owner was a really cool guy who had been a beatnik during the 50s and had travelled all over Europe handing out communist leaflets until the authorities threw him and his friends out of each country. He was part of some Pasadena OTO lodge that raised the whore of Babylon, but that’s another story. After the show everyone was talking about hip hop shows at the E-bar and they always ended when some big dude punched some one out. They had to stop the events due to violence. As a coincidence there were some big dudes in the alley drinking 40s and bragging to each other about their tai kwon do training. When we leave the E-bar these big dudes are sitting on my car. Slippy doesn’t like that, and gets in the face of this big Mr. T dude. "Get the fuck off the car." The other guys, each about 6'4" are surprised – "You're strapped right? You must be strapped." I look over and the Mr. T guy casually punches out Slippy – he flies back like a rag doll. But even more surprising is that Slippy pops up back in the guys face and starts lecturing him about his bad manners. I'm ready to drive away at this point. It didn’t seem like a good fight or decent odds. So me and everyone else in the area are trying to convince Slippy to get in the car. I think it effected Slippys brain afterward because he got a military, taxi driver crew cut the next day.

Some time around then some tweaker JPL(jet propulsion laboratory) Rocket scientists, moved up to the ranch and started what was probably a meth lab in one of the trailers. They kept knocking out my power every couple days, and it would take the land lord a few days to turn it back on. Even worse the landlord moved pigs into the abandoned pen next to my unibomber shack. The pigs were very unhappy living in a cement pit and would fight all night long. I called it the gladiator pit. So I moved off the ranch.

Open Mics were getting to be a drag so we decided to do more established shows and start recording demos to hit bigger venues like Als Bar or whatever. I think we played with the Polar Goldie Cats and other art rock bands. I guess we qualified as art rock. I had bought a cheap Emax II sampler but had to sell it to slippy to make rent. He filled it full of weird asymmetrical looped sample noises and probly spilled beer on it or something. so we would wedge used match books between the keys to play the loops. The loops would play in interesting asynchronous patterns and we would play drums jam and rap freestyles over it. We had recruited a drummer. I cant remember his name. but he kept getting pissed at us and storming off in the middle of our gigs. one of use would jump on the drums and keep going. We also tried working with this tall 6'6" DJ who grew up being dragged around Europe by his Opera star Diva mother. He had a super high brow snobby arrogant attitude about audio, and if you listened to him you might imagine he was an top notch expert engineer. But when you listened to his actual work, the exact opposite was apparent. He did this remix that sounded like it was being played through a vacuum cleaner nozzle by a little kid. It had me and slippy rolling on the floor laughing it was so bizarre and off. We couldn’t resist doing a gig with him. He wanted to perform from the basement of the ebar, dubbing out mix, while we were on the main floor; he ended up turning us down so we were barely audible, worried about the slightest amount of distortion.

I think our best gig was with Guy Albino from the Hawd Gankstuh Emceez Wid Gatz making a cameo. Albino rode tot eh gig with Slippy; I don’t know what went down but Albino was shook up – said he would never ride with that guy ever again. At the gig Slippy was jumping on a jogging trampoline while playing his gtr. The trampoline broke, so he started whipping the heavy springs at peoples heads, almost hitting the fancy desert case. Albino got me in a headlock and started pounding my face into the bass drum. Eventually I banged my head on the edge of the drum. I fell on the ground and started writhing around. Then jumped up with a big grin because I was faking. -Except my forehead had split open pro-wrestler style and my face was covered with blood. Later when I was recovering in the bath tub and a fire ant crawled up and bit my eyeball. I had to laugh. It was a rough night.

We recorded the All Fucked Up album around that time. I will go more into that in a later blog.

As described in a previous blog, Symphonia Innamorato Celstium Revelationum, is a free download album of exp tracks I recorded after Fantastic Voyage.

"Do Not Use Your Fangs" is a raw and minimal track with nice raw energy. The kick snare pattern was influenced by an old kool moe D latin hip hop beat, that I think maybe have also influenced that Busta Rymes "party with me" beat. I thought the groove would make a nice minimal techno style beat.

I contrasted the minimal kick snare with a chaotic complex double time beat made from revving up a breakbeat pattern to 240 bpm. A style influenced by early drum and bass where they sped up breaks to about 160 bpm and added a reggae bassline.

The accordian is a sample from a vintage field recording from sicily. Sicilian folk music is unique; its a nice blend of styles from africa, asia, eastern europe, and the meddaterrainean. Some of it sounds like polka, some sounds japanese, some sounds like a digiridoo. The accordian has worldwide popularity among street musicians for being loud. You can hear it around the block.

The bells are from a donkey cart.

After a quick breakdown, the beat comes back with a salsa fusion bass line played with an acidy rubbery texture. Its raw and trashy with a broken loop.

Later on, I used this track as the basis for a more elaborate and polished song, recorded with PM and Venusia De Sade on the LOVECRAFT TECHNOLOGIES CD.

After recording Fantastic Voyage for Wordsound, I rocked "Symphonia Innamorato Celstium Revelationum" for an experimental music Festival in Olympia Washington. Each of the tracks is 120bpm, the classic early house/disco tempo. On this set I continued with Fantastic Voyage various themes, playing with half time/double time & chaos vs. order; - but bringing in more techno vocabulary.

The first track, "Surf The Sapphire Sky" was based on a distressed Opera break - the grandiosity of a giant orchestra with a grimy distorted edge.

I appreciate the tonal color or classical arrangements. Many operas have grand bitter sweet lyrical melodies, that are like pop music in that they are designed to accompany vocals. Theres an extensive tradition of using classical samples in various progressive contexs/genres like 70s art music form the 1930- present, psyche pop music like the beattles, art rock like VU, Residents, Throbbing Gristle.

The rythmic groove is an slowed down arabic hand drum groove layered with a Flamenco cajón.

The Kick snare pattern is from techno. The distortion is a typical industrial signature. In this case its the influence of Layng Martine III, aka Corporal Blossom (aka Bill Laswell's former Engineer), who I was kicking it with in Seattle at the time.

The guitar is a samba plucking style played by philosophy major.

The synth bass/keyboard line are salsa fusion influenced.

Lapis Luzuli: Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset (video)

This is the fifth track on my latest album "Lapis Luzuli", the cut is titled "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset."

The video was directed by Marguerite Valance, photographed by Jonathan Taylor, and edited by Marguerite Valance and Jonathan Taylor. It stars the lovely and talented Heidi Van Horne (www.heidivanhorne.com), Zakary Miguel Tiegen, Sebastian Clough, and Sarita Ahuja.

Ive worked with Marguerite off and on for years. Ive provided music to her masonic conspiracy narrative "Prince of Peace." We've collaborated on a the script for a sexualized sitcom pilot called "Real Sexxx" (it can be found on prince-charming.net).

For this video Marguerite drew upon the most archetypal interpretation of my stage name PRINCE CHARMING; one of the rules of classic PRINCE CHARMING folk tales is that Prince Charming saves a damsel in distress. This narrative element combined with the playful vintage 1920s vibe of the track inspired Marguerite to create a vintage melodrama.

For the Damsel, Marguerite contacted her old New Orleans friend Heidi Van Horne. Heidi is a nice, friendly, down to earth Pin-Up superstar, who has appeared in magazines like Vogue Italia, on the cover of numerous calendars, books like "Hot Rod Pin Ups" & "Modern Vixens" and etc. She also has a syndicated custom car column in newspapers around the country. Heidi is a talented actress.

Marguerite and Heidi worked together on a Lovecraftian horror short called "Graveyard Diaries." Marguerite describes the shoot as climbing in and out of the tombs and crypts of New Orleans in the middle of the night. The film was about ghouls and grave robbers.

The film also stars a couple of colorful villains. Zakary Miguel Tiegen aka Zak T, is a professional actor. Marguerite kept directing him to go bigger and over act, which was freaking him out - it went against all his training. Zak is ex military and has a huge vintage knife collection. He kept pulling out strange weapons each with its own story, like: "I got this one while hiking in the golden triangle it was used for poppy cultivation in the 1800s." Zak had other funny stories about buying a black CRX customized for for street racing. He used to drive around the streets of LA listening to this endless gong loop (not the band). Until the day FAST AND THE FURIOUS3 came out, when it was stolen.

The other bady guy Sebastian is decked out in a vintage hollywood charleton heston touch of evil brown-face make up. He first surprised everyone with the costume for the Day of the Dead celebration at the Hollywood Forever cemetary. It was super hilarious and Un-PC especially since he was with a chicana activist chick who was decked out in a perfect Frida Khalo costume - she was from the same town/tribe in Oaxaca. Sebastian is the director of exhibitions at a local cultural museum, and works with all these real life indiana jones types who research crazy stuff like haunted caves dedicated to santa muerte. Or artists in Haiti who make sculpures out of bones stolen from the grave yard mixed with discarded car parts. Sebastian gets to hear all the real inside stories about the haunted accursed artifacts - stuff too alarming for the public.

Sarita the actress playing the fortune teller is probly the most normal person at the shoot. She recently got married to a Hungarian Librarian. Marguerite and I did a bollywood dance routine at the ceremony, which was super fun. Most of the audience was Indian.

The video was shot by Jonathan Taylor who is also a talented film maker from new orleans. He's a financial industry computer programming wiz and an encylapedia of conspiracy theories. After this shoot we helped Jonathan and Heidi shoot a rocker chick work out video called "Fit to Rock." http://www.fittorockfitness.com/

Back to the "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" video. Marguerite was going for cohen-brothers-esque vibe which I think she killed. Plus she added all sorts of vintage stylings like the slightly under cranked camera look where people are slightly sped up, and the credit cards for each player.

I asked Marguerite to Marry me soon after the shoot and we ran off to vegas. We're now working on some more screenplays and a web series called "Heliosphere."

Lapis Luzuli: Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset (music)

"Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" is the fifth track on my latest Karl Records release: "Lapis Luzuli."

The song name is a homage to the work of Abraham Merritt, one of my favorite pulp Supernaturalist novelists. He was known as a collector of weapons, carvings, and primitive masks from his travels, as well as a library of occult literature that reportedly exceeded 5000 volumes. The beat for "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" is a mix of a halftime Dubstep/Reggae/grindcore/nepali folk influenced groove, and a double time merengue/baltimore club beat. The kick rolls are common in dubstep and hip hop (MPC style); but in this case I was mostly influenced by drum machine based metal band called Godflesh.

THe kick snare groove is shared by both reggae and nepali folk music. Reggae has an obvious but not well known south asian influence - from the migration of south asians through the British carribean colonies.

If you listen to Jamaican maroon colony (runaway slave communities in the Jamaican mountains) drumming you will hear much of the call and response roots of reggae but you will not hear the bounciness that developed in the 70s.

For the extra bouncy 70s reggae groove you need to also check south asian drumming (the bouncy 70s reggae groove can be found both in northern and southern indian and lankan music). The south asian influence on 90s dancehall beats is also noticable. The accent pattern is shared with some dhol bhangra drumming.

On "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" I chose that specific kick/snare pattern becasue its groovey and spacious. I was originally going to use a nepali groove trick where the kick and snare pattern is reversed every two bars, but it didnt quite work, and I was able to get a similar effect with the kick roll. I did a trek in Nepal in 2001, and brought back a bunch of cassettes.

The merengue influence comes from Latin booty music, a floridian booty electro style, that uses merengue shuffle pattern. it eventually evolved into reggaeton. Ive been into latin booty music since the 90s and have mixed latin percussion into my detroit booty techno influenced tracks.

I like the merengue shuffle style becasue it remind me of the north african moroccon/mali/flamenco shuffle pattern. Lately Ive been listening to a bunch of merengue urbano, its a fun merengue style for mambo/cali footwork.

For "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" Im rocking a bassline that hits the double time groove in a driving bmore club accent.

The simple piano bassline is the glue that holds the two grooves together. I like arrangements where one instrument only hits a couple notes. It comes from a hi life funk influence; they might have 7 guitare players only hiting a couple notes each, adding the extra funkiness of the interplay/conversation of the voices/grooves of the players. Like a drum circle.

I laced the track up with samples from classic early jazz - for a nice vintage flavor.

I like to crate dig at the library where they have archives of music going back to 1898 or so. the sounds have a nice warm scratchy sound and advanced musicianship. back then hotels, bars, taverns, whore houses & juke joints had to hire live musicians if they wanted any music, so there were more professional musicians working and a higher skill level form all the competition. No looping or machines.

Early jazz recordings are dope; they have the influence of ragged time musicality, which is a nice american cross blend of african syncopation and european classical (like mozart minuets). - a blend shared with early brasilian music, early calypso and most new world music culture. Some ragtime with drums is super funky.

Im also throwing in some psych garage rock (sampled and live gtr), 50s RnB, eastern euopean folk, noir and classical samples, and some videogame noises. Sometimes I like to blend the noises in a way that suggests a consistent (yet fantastical) terrain, and other times i throw in a wild card to clash against everything as a contrast. like a popping flourecent color against a backdrop of earthy tones.

There's a psyche style where strange noises pop in and out of the mix. I think it originated from creative use of the guitar volume knob, and eventually the volume petal. I like to do this in my composition, -use a sound once, popping it out of no-where and disappearing it immediately. One of my big influences for this style comes from Pink Flyods first album.

Overall "Dragons of the Sky Drink the Blood of the Sunset" is a playful track. It combines some of the styles recipes I used on Psychtropical Heatwave with the half time/double time chaos vs order experimentation I was doing on Fantastic Voyage.

Say my Name: PRINCE CHARMING

when I chose the name PRINCE CHARMING, I thought it was a hilarious contrast to the grotesque and baffoonish hardcore punk/rap vocals I was doing.

Coming from a background in punk ska, I was thinking of blue beat icon, PRINCE BUSTER.

I thought PRINCE CHARMING worked well as a hip hop name - it fit in with royalty like Run DMC "the kings of rock" Prince Paul, and slick rick "the ruler"

I thought PRINCE CHARMING was a perfect pop name. It reminded me of American Music Icons Like King Pleasure and Duke Ellington. I was surprised the name PRINCE CHARMING it hadnt been used before.

I was probably subconsciously influenced by my childhood. In the third grade my GF was an actress, and we used to put on plays together at a local college campus where both our parents worked. We would do parodies of nursery tales and etc for the college kids in exchange for $. Yes, I would play Prince Charming in productions like "Oilerella" - a cinderella adaptation about a factory girl. Her father was a film professor, and we would catch screenings of Topper, Sulliven's Travels and etc.

Another subconscious influence on the name choice is probly a weird encounter I had with this beautiful schizophrenic chick. I was eating at this Mexican restaurant when this weird Pippy Longstocking looking chick walked up and started talking to me. She was a total knock out and completely bonkers. She was schizo riffing about all this dungeons and dragons type word mash and comparing L.A. traffic to spiders sliding along giant spider webs. She reminded me of this kooky chick I used to go out with in High School, only much more intense and out there. Picking up on her conversational topic, I asked her if she had ever looked into the car next to her and seen Prince Charming driving along. A lightbulb went off in her head and she immediately associated me with Prince Charming. She wanted to follow me around, which was cool, but I wasnt into her romantically because she was mentally ill. At one point she drank an entire jar of honey from my kichen. After a while, she randomly punched me in the stomache for no apparent reason and ran off with a creepy white supremicist dude in a taco bell parking lot. The last I heard of her, she left a message on my machine asking me to meet with her at "the donut shop" - whatever that means. I later found out she was a well known character about town - people called her Pippy Longstocking.

When I chose the name, I thought it was a funny stage name. I never really anticipated that people would actually call me Prince Charming. But in Seattle when I was rocking shows around town people started calling me Prince Charming like it was my real name. Which was hilarious. A former associate told me about seeing a shrink for some reason and telling the shrink about working with a rapper called Prince Charming, and the shrink almost had them commited as a schizophrenic.

Over the years, I've tried to use the name well; check my creative comedy writing at prince-charming.net ... In the tradition of the classic DADA play Ubu Roi, Ive used the name to satire the European caste system. While people now associate royalty with glamor, they forget that royals were essentially warlords, that owned everyone else in thier territory. If you've seen Braveheart you may know about

Droit de seigneur "the lord's right", same as latin "Jus primae noctis" a legal right allowing the lord of an estate to take the virginity of the estate's virgins.

If you read the full version of a text I previously recommended called "The Art of Courtley Love" you will learn that royals had the right to essentially rape any of the peasants that lived on thier land. The Idea of a Prince or King being a romantic ideal of love is as silly as idealizing any warlord slave master. Thus Ive frequently signed my name as PRINCE CHARMING, SEXIEST WARLORD IN THE UNIVERSE and etc.

Ive also made fun of the European caste system with my royal dress code. Back in the age of royalty, your dress was restricted by what class you came from; only certain people were allowed to wear red or purple and etc.

Many people consider the archetype PRINCE CHARMING to be a love god, so at Prince-charming.net Ive included sexual affirmation and tantric sex parodies. I've rocked parodies of love cults. etc etc etc.

The archetype PRINCE CHARMING also exists on as part of the folkloric tradition; I've parodied folk tales with various versions of my bio.

My subversion of the Prince Charming Archetype comes well before Shrek. And the music editor for Shrek was an A&R guy/radio jock that used to play my music, for years before those films were created. I have no idea if his awareness of my work, spilled over to the Shrek writers.

IN the decades since I started performing under the name Prince Charming. Several questionable people have decided to start performing as PRINCE CHARMING without checking to see if if there was already an established performer using the name. In the internet age its completely lame. Sure, the name is an Archetype and is well known from Disney films. But when the performer in question is working in the same genre and using similar schtick it adds unneccisary confusion to their work and my work... A grotesque baffoonish punky white rapper in baltimore started performing under the name PRINCE CHARMING - I contacted his people and brought my work to their attention, and they were nice enough to change the name. A punk rock guy did a self release as PRINCE CHARMING, again covering the similar artistic territory that Ive staked out for years and years. When I contacted him, rather than stop, he immediately started immitating some of my material. Fortunately he seems to have run out of steam for the moment.

Another pit fall of the name PRINCE CHARMING, is its association with ADAM ANT, who wrote a gay (homosexual) love song/enpowerment anthem called PRINCE CHARMING. Some European music writers, when they hear PRINCE CHARMING immediately want to talk about Adam Ant. Which is cool, the dude did wear lots of flashy clothes, and did some nice yodeling. http://www.dandyism.net/ One Euro music journalist asked me in an interview if my name was a reference to the Adam Ant song. Answer: I find Malcom Mclaren to be an inspiration; I suspect that much of Adam's "flash" and frenetic music hybridization was the influence of Mclaren - the style seems to be carried over into Mclarens solo albums rather than AAs solo efforts.

Whenever the name PRINCE CHARMING is brought up around Detroit kids, they want to talk about PRINCE. I wonder if Prince Paul, Prince Po, Prince Far I, Prince Jammy, Fresh Prince, and the Arabian Prince get the same reaction?

I respect PRINCE's work overall; I really like a few Prince songs like "Get Off," "Sexy Motherfucker," and "Kiss" - and I like that he's a colorful character.

Lapis Lazuli - Garlands of Frozen Suns

This Blog entry is about the 6th song on my latest album Lapis Lazuli.

The track title, "GARLANDS OF FROZEN SUNS," is a reference to the early 20th century futurist movement, which is one of my favorite styles of retro futurism. I love retro-futurism because it combines opposites; it looks backward and forward at the same time; it explores the fantasy and idealism of the future while being rooted to a specific concrete cultural framework of a present that no longer exists -creating an extra fantastical topography.

The Futurist movement had one foot in the Romantic and Symbolist poetry movements of the 19th century, and one foot in the technological promise of the new 20th century. Futurists would write heroic romantic poems about the lightbulb (electric suns), the automobile, machine gun, blimp, and other marvels of technology. It reminds me of those bugs bunny worlds fair cartoons about houses with robot vaccum cleaners, only more grandiose mythic and operatic.

Futurists were also obsessed with time and simultaneousism due to new technologies like the telephone & radio. These topics are still interesting today now that we have worldwide simultaneousism through the internet and immediate proximity to much of the music/art/culture ever recorded (dots or to audio) or performed. Artists have a much richer environment to react/interact with; music genres are no longer confined/defined/influenced by whoever lives in the neighborhood; genre's are now contrived and artificial delineated rules within a social set, rather than the raw expression of an artist reacting to their surroundings. I digress...

The "GARLANDS OF FROZEN SUNS" drum beat is down tempo version of the native american 4/4 tomtom beat, like you might hear at a pow wow.

The same beat can be found in Tibetian and Siberian Native Music.

This 4/4 beat is at the root of house disco music. Native music and dances have been influential to U.S. colonial/post-colonial culture since the early explorers landed. This cultural communication is well documented in styles like tap dancing - one of the roots of house dancing. If you go to a pow wow you might recognize some steps.

Post colonial central and south american countries where the native genocide wasnt as complete have an even richer influence from pre colonial cultures. I embellished the 4/4 beat to give it a back beat influenced by both the chicago blues and house, and added bhangra breaks. The bhangra drums are inspired by the central asian 4/4 influence/connection - Ive read books that describe Himalayan culture as being one of the best preserved examples of Ice Age religion/ cosmology/ consciousness. I'm also fascinated by the roots of civilization and the pre-historic mystery of Indus valley trade with Sumeria, ancient egypt and perhaps ancient america. There are ancient maps that are accurate in ways historians cannot explain - they show the correct geographic coast line of antarctica for example (without ice coverage). They found cocaine in the remains of an ancient egyptian mummy.

The bass line is influenced by Chicago Blues/jazz, early 70s reggae (post rock steady), and post-punk (Birthday party).

The guitar line is influenced by Mali and Congalese pop music.

WIth some post punk psyche textures thrown in. Theres also some reggae textures. Reggae being a close neighbor of blues/gospel and has psyche elements.

THE VIDEO was directed by my friend Seana Carroll, a vet from the DC art punk scene.

When I approached Seana (and all my director friends), the main concept/guidence I offered was that the videos should look like a perfume commercials.

I always knew that Seana had good/hip taste and when we met to discuss the video she showed me projects she worked on with her DC art/punk friends that were really impressive.

WHen Seana called me up a few weeks later, I was shocked to discover that she had rocked videos for THE ENTIRE ALBUM! It was amazing. However, I had already asked other director friends to rock clips. I asked seana if she could concentrate the best material for one cut. It turned out amazing. I love that it reminds me of classic industrial dance/factory records videos from the 80s.

I love the symbolism and political message. And when I think of the piece as a perfume commercial it all comes together for me. The original plan was to add another layer of surrealist text to emphasize/expose the perfume commercial. But the video was so great, I decided it didnt need anything else.

Seana comes form a magickal family - her father has written a novel from beyond the grave - carefully dictated through a psychic medium using an ouji board. It's yet unpublished - interested industry professionals should get in contact with her.

ORGASMO - Planet Dust

The third cut on my first album is called Planet Dust. The name is influenced by Africa Bambaata's Planet Rock. A big influence on Detroit Electrofunk.

The Electrofying Mojo used to be on the radio every night doing extended mixes that combined Bambaata with Kraftwerk, or Parliment with Devo. Ive always been into space hop.

Planet Dust starts with a sample from a kiddie record. I later learned that the same sample was used at some point by "Man or Astro Man" - Im not familar with their work but I respect thier schtick - I like B movies, garage rock, space rock and etc.

The beat was written by MEK of CBS and the O.G. LA Shapeshifters. http://www.discogs.com/artist/Mek+One Circus told me the same beat was used by the new LA Shapeshifters on one of their CDs; I havent heard that one yet. At a certain point I was kicking it with Mek and we would work on beats and whatever. He had some deep hip hop knowledge and taught me how to count syllables to make up flows. MEK had lived in Detroit for a while, and we both knew obscure old school hip hop from the late 70s and early 80s. Back then he was into the Beatnuts complex funky jazzy drum programming style. It matched the beat programming technique I was using, so I would tell Mek how to use low velocity ghost hits to accent the main beat and give the drums a more authentic funk sound. Stuff like that. My contribution to the Planet Dust beat was the cymbal pattern being played at various pitch, giving it a Liquid Sky soundtrack vibe.

I also slowed the beat way down, giving it a heavier feel - a style I was developing at the time - heard on my Psychotropical Heatwave album.

Mek had an SP-1200 drum machine. Already an antique in the early 90s, it was prized by "True School" hip hop heads (like the O.G. Shapeshifters) that fetishized late 80s NYC hip hop. It only had a 4 or 8 second sample time (I cant remember) so you had to do weird tricks like speed records up to 78rpm to sample them, then slow them down. It gave everything a gritty feel. The Machine has a unique swing and frequency signature. Heds still use the machine to capture the early wu or cypress hill feel.

The Shapeshifters were started by RELM who named the crew. He brought in MEK for his SP drum machine skills. After RELM moved to the east coast, MEK kept things going with ROB1 and a new guy called CIRCUS. Eventually MEK moved to NYC, ROB1 died and CIRCUS built the crew up to its world class status. But thats another story. I think MEK and PERK1 of the Original crew brached off to form the Ex Vandal crew. Relm went on to Hawd Gankstuh Rapper Emceez Wid Gatz, Pixeltan and his animation work Y'all SO Stoopid and etc. the crew Circus put together, Exist etc are cool - I tried rocking some cuts with them but got distracted, and it never came together. Same with Mek and Perk.

Back in the day I had to stop kicking it with MEK becasue he would start too much beef. One time we went to the 7-11 and I look over and there are 8 or so gangsters standing around him; the biggest dude is in MEK's face and is shaking so hard that tall-boy Budweiser cans are fallign out of his six pack onto the floor. THe big gangster dude yells at MEK to "pick it up." MEK laughs in his face, "Hell no." I thought that MEK was getting ganged up on. ANd even though the odds looked retarded, and I didnt have health insurance, I decided to back MEK up. He was talking in a loud voice for the whole store to hear him " you're gonna see some serious shit!" and etc. Fortunately before things got lame, a big hulking security guard steps out of the back of the store and unsnaps his gun. The worse we had to deal with was having to walk through the crowd of gangsters to get to my car. They didnt even try to hit us - I used to get worse by homeboys at Detroit Party stores, trying to start shit. WHen we pulled away I asked MEK what happened. He said that he went up to the big dude in the beer section and said "FUck that Budweiser shit, this is the real shit: Miller" - so essentially MEK started the fight being retarded. I was buying a snapple myself... He then said that it was funny when Mexicans shoot at you because "All Mexicans are bad shots" -I knew then that I couldnt hang. btw MEK is not a big guy. I later learned that he had something to prove but thats another story.

Back to Planet Dust: The vocal style on the verses is influenced by Johnny Cash.

The flow is influenced by Ced Gee on The Ultramagnetic MCs third album. I liked the flow becasue it didnt rhyme.

The Lyrics were a surreal cut up (see the surrealist Movement newspaper game and WS Burroughs) influenced by the Amok Books Catalog, back when they featured literature.

The flows are influenced by the OG Shapeshifter Atwater Cypher, esp the guys from Basement Unit, Mugpush and Ska, also Relm and BDPs first album. The vocal effect is a homage to Parliment, with dubbed out backing vocals.

The second Cut on my First Album ORGASMO ALL FCKED UP/CAVALCADE OF THUGS is "All Fucked Up."

The beat is a nod to the 70s latin-funk group WAR by way of Cypress Hills first release. As a player, my interest in hip hop always dug deeper to the funk grooves they were sampling.

There are two basslines on the track.

Theres a grunge bassline to add heaviness. Detroit bands have been mixing punk, metal and 70s rock since the mid eighties. Theres always been an MC5/Stooges influence, and Negative Approach was the big hardcore band at the time (among others I would see at all ages shows at the Hungry Brain). A friend went to Evergreen (Olympia Washington) in 87 and started sending me cassettes of that NW style that later blew up.

For funk, I added a second bass - a slap bass through a wah petal. A funkadelic influenced style mixed with disco octaves.

Ive been playing funk since high school, influenced primarily by learning basslines from Funkadelic, Pfunk, War, the Meters, James Brown, Jaco, Isaac Hayes, Bohannon, and hella disco music etc. Even funk influenced new wave bands like the Police, Talking Heads, TomTom CLub, Shriekback, Gang of Four and etc. Im probly forgetting some people. I learned as many songs as possible, just to learn the grooves and licks. All my funk bass playing is heavily influenced by reggae grooves - something I cant shake because of my reggae ska roots. I will go into that later.

The guitar noise tones are influenced by Birthday Party, Sonic Youth, Live Skull style noise/blues rock.

The rap is influenced by several styles. Back in the day the on-beat off-beat rap flow was trendy for a minute. My favorite version of that style was done by Goodlife MC Volume10.

Mixed with a Captain Beefheart influenced delivery:

The lyrics are influence by a punk rock sense of humor and that cross country trip with my GF where we killed time by making up raps (she would throw out a crazy subject and I would make a rhyme).

The chorus is influenced by the Liks and beck.

The bridge is influenced by O.C. and the Residents.

I started buying Residents records when I was 12 or 13; I saw them on a new wave video show (CHannel 62 used to show MV3 right before The Scene). I started harassing the local record store to buy The Commerical Album, Duck Stab, Not Available and Etc..

Im not saying I was faded when I recorded this track but it was hard to finish the bridge. The mumbling sounded good so I kept it. I dont know if Eminem heard this before recording purple pills but he used the same joke. Detroit is a small town and I distributed about 200 promo copies on the streets in one day(in 1996). That Night I was at the Insane Clown Posse's studio and they already had a copy.

Again this album was recorded and released in 94 before ANY underground alternative hip hop existed.

For my latest album Lapis Lazuli, I decided I wanted to reach out and work with a variety of fresh directors. I have this theory that all of my friends are talented, so I hit up my homie from work, Wesley Harris.

Wes is a hilarious guy and an awesome writer. We used to work togather on the Paramount Pictures Paranormal Report, an underground occult comedy newsletter about strange phenomena on the Paramount Pictures Lot. The studio is next to the Hollywood forever cemetary and there are many rumors of ghosts on the lot - everyone from Valentino to Red Foxx(who actually passed away on one of the stages))...

At the time Wes was a Katrina refugee from New Orleans. He Sat throught the hurricane... and then decided to evacuate. Wes has a colorful background working as a Jesuit Missionary in the Dominican Republic, teaching elementary school in various Native American Reservations and later living with his wife Nicole in Brasil where she got her graduate degree studying spiritual posession. It's from her that I learned that one of my samba teachers is a essentially a voodoo priestess. She was interviewed as part of Nicole's studies.

Wes had just completed a couple shorts about spear fishing and sexy nuns, so I knew he was a good director. I had talked with Wes about underwater kelp forrest and had never seen one in a music video. so I asked wes if he would be down shooting a Mayan Deren style beach romance with a surreal under water scene.

Here's one of Maya Derens clips. It's influenced many music videos and you can see why.

Wes agreed and I put him in touch with my mutli-talented model friend Amara Wilson. She's super photogenic (a former parisian model) and easy to work with. Amara is a fashion show organizer and sceneter in L.A., I met through one of my ex gfs. I've projected my travel videos at a couple of her gloabally themed fashion carnivals.

She has a store called Haute Olive in one of L.A.s hipster meccas, Echo Park.

I recommend the shop to fashionistas and other shoppers of refined taste - Amara was the manager of Sirens and Sailors (one of L.A.s hipper boutiques) for several years before opening her own shop, and it features lots of up and coming L.A. and international designers (featured on America's Top Model, Project Runway etc). SHe also sells designer clothes she swapped for modeling work. Another cool store feature a set of turntables - she likes to throw on beats and rock performances as she works.

Amara is also talented vocalist and plays the chello; so I've wanted to work with her for a while. I just finished recording an album that features her singing and rapping. From reading my blog you may recognize that the backing tracks are influenced by street dance styles like Krump, Get Lite, Reggaetone, Juke, Baile Funk, and Tango. It's a split LP with MC COnfuz called "Demonomaniacs Anonymous" and it's due sometime in the next couple months on an underground German Hip Hop Label called DL44.

Back to the story of the BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE (videos). I asked Amara if she had chemistry with any male actor/models and she came back with her friends younger brother who is a surfer and a professional football player, Anthony Vergnalia. We shot the clip at a secret surfer beach in malibu. Anthony had no acting experience but did an excellent job, especially considdering the water was freezing cold.

Knowing of Wes's comedic poetry talents, I asked him to rock a parody of Classic South American love poetry like Neruda and Lorca. He did an epic job, some people have even assumed that its an authentic poem from that genre. Wes has been doing Portuguese ESL parody videos. So to take things further I asked Wes to do a spoken Portuguese version of his poem. Bravo!

BEATING OF BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE is first cut on my latest album Lapis Lazuli.

The name is a reference to the haunted sea stories of William Hope Hodgson. You can find a couple of his better stories and other eerie macabre tales on this awesome web site: http://www.amalgamatedspooks.com/

The title also equates flying with swimming underwater - a reference to mysterious dream-space logic from our collective unconsciousness and astral projection. How are we able to have flying dreams if we've never flown? How are our brains able to imagine so perfectly the tops of houses and etc? Is the sensation of flying left over from our evolutionary consciousness of being fish or single celled organisms?

The main feature of the track is the atmospherics. The atmospherics on BEATING OF BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE is made up from a variety of field recordings, including earthquakes, the natural sound of radiation from the radio-sphere and various sound-scapes from nature. I also drew upon field recordings of termites and other insects that exterminators use to diagnose problems.

Why juxtapose such a broad variety of sounds and sound-scapes? Back at NYU Film School, I picked up a couple concepts from a class called "Sound as Art" - one of them is that humans ground themselves in space through their hearing. The teacher kept stressing that we have eyelids but not ear lids. We may not have sonar but we get a 3d picture of the world around us through our audio field. I combined this concept with something I picked up through meditation and psychedelic painting; -the idea of overloading the senses so that the viewer starts filtering information, and thus creates their own picture. This is something that all humans do in daily life, something that's described by Timothy Leary and similar 60s philosophers as reality tunnels. But applied to audio... My experiments started when I worked at NYUs graduate recording studios as a teaching assistant. I had access to nice sound effects libraries and mixing equipment (before digital audio made this sort of work easy) and I would layer 20 sound-scapes together. The result had a profound effect on listener - it specially dislocated the mind and allowed it to create its own fantastical sense of area.

The use of sound-scapes mixed with music is also a reference to EZ-listening records from the dawn of stereo. Back in the early 60s when stereo was being marketed against mono - producers were experimenting with extreme panning and would try to spice up the stereo field.

One of my favorites from the era is the Mystic Moods Orchestra that had thunder storm sound effects through their recordings.

Exotica records are well known for their faux bird calls and jungle sounds.

In my track BEATING OF BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE I mix real jungle sounds with vintage sounding sci-fi effects (real atmospheric radiation sounds remarkably like the primitive electronic music on the Forbidden Planet soundtrack.)

The music in BEATING OF BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE is a continuation of a couple styles I've been working with.

One is down tempo jazzy techno. When I moved back to the Detroit at the end of 1996, I would hang out at Zoot's coffee shop on their techno night. The building was owned by Kevin Monroe's (of the Laughing Hyenas and Mule) family and some of my friends used to rent rooms. Eventually they turned the living room into a coffee shop to make extra cash, and opened a record store in the basement - that we previously used as a practice space. Zoot's had a dope techno night with various DJs - it was a real communal scene where DJs were totally cool and would show off beat matching and blending tricks to each other. No snobby hater attitudes. I would just chill and soak up the abstract techno beats.

It wasn't really a dance scene so the djs could play more left field stuff. But I did see some awesome dancing there would some dudes would wear shakers on their legs and do some styles like fraternity stepping. When I got home I would program beats. I tried sending some to Skiz @ Wordsound and he didn't really get it. He would say "it's just a drum beat." Sometimes he was right, but really he was looking for something more like the Psychotropical Heatwave sound, that matched his taste. Around that time I programmed the techno influenced beats that would end up on my SUMMER IN PARADISE album and some proto-dubstep/half step cuts like what ended up on Crooklyn Dub Consortium 3 under the name Lovecraft Technologies.

Ive been listening to Techno and programming beats since about 85. Back then hip hop was heavily based on drum machines like it is now. With Run DMC, Africa Bambaata doing uptempo tracks. On Detroit Radio the Electrofying Mojo and the New Wave station used to play hip hop and new wave together. Back when Prince was big. IMO Detroit techno started as black kids rocking new wave. In the U.K. the Mod scene hadnt died yet. New wave acts like Yaz and SOft Cell were rocking Motown "Northern Soul" (aka Mod) style cuts. Which some college kids in Detroit were feeling.

When I started hearing Jeff Mills aka the Wizard playing minimalist beats on the radio in 86 I thought it was house. Only when I moved to NYC in 87 did people correct me. In the mid 90s I also kicked it at clubs like the Red Door, Family Function, and 3 floors of fun (aka 3 foors of whores - st. andrews hall) and various udnerground parties. One of my people worked at submerge, I think my beats were too left field for them - they wanted dance floor material.

One thing about Detroit techno that may not be obvious is the influence of jazz - Most Motown drummers had a hidden jazz influence and Detroit radio had or has an amazing post bop dj on weekenights. I think his name is Ed Love? Some post bop has a bossa nova influence and that is my connection between the two main music styles on this track. IMO Part of the Detroit techno funk is the influence of post bop 60s jazz funk (either directly or through Motown soul).

The second main style I was continuing with this track is elongated and disassembled downtempo.

The idea is to push the boundary of slower tempos by using break beats to accent the groove every couple bars, and to use a sliding sound to carry the groove. In Magical Formulae of the Heretical Magi (from my ANATOMY OF PRINCE CHARMING album) I use a bass. BEATING OF BLACK WINGS BENEATH THE WATERLINE I use a little bass (my sliding bass style is influenced by Soweto Jive but that's another story). Most of the slow groove is carried by an African Kora sample played one octave down. This is something I like to do to create an interesting half tempo under groove. I like to layer samples at various octaves. Something I picked up from reading about the Pythagorean theory of harmonics and intervals.

The resulting groove is decorated with dubbed out strings, lutes, harps and etc. Something beautiful and mysterious that gives a sense of cinematic anticipation. I wanted to reference retro 90s downtempo (an authentic style not a rehash) both to connect with 90s downtempo listeners from back in the day and as a nod to the soon come 90s revival.

If someone would rather hear funky influenced dubstep or JD influenced spacey techno hip hop or other popular 2009 styles can check my back catalog, I was programming those styles in 96-2001 (before they existed as genres or cliches), and have releases (and some unreleased recordings) to prove it.

"Lapis Lazuli" is a reference to blue (blues), rock, the exotic (it's mined in Afghanistan, Russia, Siberia, Angola, Burma, Pakistan, and chile), antiquity (lapis beads have been found in neolithic burials), painting (it has been used to make pigment - to paint palaces, illuminate medaeval manuscripts and renaissance texts). Lapis Lazuli is a reference to royalty (used in Cleopatras eye shadow, figurines found in sumarian tombs), the divine (its been used to decorate churches, inscribed in the 140th chapter of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, lapis lazuli; in the shape of an eye set in gold, was considered an amulet of great power).

Conceptually the mistranslation illustrates how ideas mutate and they pass from source to source. Like the classic telephone game. But also a reference to internal artistic processes, like the cybernetic feedback loop between the internal and external world of an artist. the artist reacts to their environment - creates something - then reacts to their environment + what theyve created - creates something - then reacts to their environment plus the 2 things theyve created.

THis is part two of my seattle story (about the misfit hip hop crew). I left off where the guitar player retreated into the lab. And I continued on with MC confuz as a hip hop crew rather than a dub hop noise band (illbient? or noise? depends on your perspective).

We tried to recruit people who had enough style/swag/presence to be solo artists - like the wu-tang clan.

Confuz met MC Fetish working at a Subway sandwich shop. She would spend all day at work eating sandwiches and writing lyrics. She would wear her mayonaise and mustard encrusted Subway uniform to practice, and some of our shows. her best friend worked in a sex shop and she liked to read all the imported fetish magazines - thus her name. She wrote super tight conceptual stories, each line was hilarious, and visciously thought provoking. She also had the sickest flows. Some times we compared her to Eminem if he was a black girl, but she had her own vibe. She was super rowdy, and got us gigs at biker parties held by this guy "WIld Man" - who had a run down mansion decked out with vintage motorcycles in every room. the motorcycles were built with custom bondage gear made out of deer skin - davey crocket style. WHen we first met WIld Man he was walking around wearing a bloody flip flop. Some one pointed out his foot was bleeding since WIld Man didnt seem to notice he had stepped on a nail or something earlier. I have no Idea what he was on. That all stopped when Fetish was banned from WIld Mans house for being too rowdy - I dont know what she did... but I can guess. At a certain point she decided she was bi curious. and we ended up doing a show at some giant gothic rave with a very serious occult ceremony dedicated to Kronos - it was very somber like a Catholic mass. Waiting for our set time various crew members were getting more and more wasted and Fetish started hitting on the gothic princesses in a really crude forward manner. like she would walk up to some corsetted PVC neovictorian pin up and put her leg on the chicks shouldar "hey baby." it was like having ODB hitting on these women. on another occasion I picked up a gig DJing at a Scion car tent at a Roots/Neptunes stadium show and Fetish showed up rolling on something and rocked the mic completely off beat for an hour with a giant grin on her face. She didnt know where the beat was and didnt care. it was freakin hilarious. After that I tried to imitate the style on some raps.

Kizmet was a very intense MC, you could see it in his eyes. I swear that guy never slept. We met him because he snaked one of our gigs at some yoga rave... so we had instant repsect for his hustle. He also rocked nice alterna rock flows (like that NYC puerto rican rapper named "Mexicano", only more fierce) and dressed in over the top hot topic finery. So we got him to join. He was involved in some sort of questionable business and was paranoid all the time. One time he showed up on my door step and warned me that the FBI was after him for his alledged involvement in a child kidnapping custody case - where he alledgedly helped kidnap some girl to south america - the more he explained it the less it made sense - he claimed that the father had secretly taped the mother abusing the girl for two hours as evidence. I asked how the father could listen to that and not intervene. Kizmet didnt have a good answer but he was very passionate and righteous... for some one involved in whatever he was involved in.

Louis X was another awesome character in the mix. He showed up at one of our shows and stomped around doing this super aggro krumping sort of heavy metal dance. We handed him the mic and he started yellling all these militant mexican slogans with 1000% more conviction than necessary. My GF at the time was also Mexican so she started throwing in random mexican cultural references and Louis X would yell them. like "EL TAPATIO!!!!!!" (the hot sauce). We tried doing shows with him but I was the only one that had his back, his aggro stomping kept skipping the turn tables and he was always trying to menace/intimidate other people in the crew. He would also show up on random peoples door steps at 3AM and try to tell them deeply disturbing personal details about his childhood. He also made outrageous boasts about his status in Seattles criminal underworld. Really alarming stuff you would never want to hear if they were true or not. We tried to recruit this schizo rapper named KAN BLAST. THe guy seemed mostly normal. But he would make wild claims about inventing "Karate rap" and "space rap" - when we checked his "space rap" lyrics they were about a starship captain thats back on earth after a long voyage and "he's just walking down the road..." which is a brilliant and unexpected take on space rap. Unfortunately Kan Blast was hard to lock down and were never able to get him to gigs.

At the time I was dating a female who had worked at one of seattle's most popular women's bars. So we became acquaited with celebrities from that scene. We were loosely associated with Yva Las Vegas; a local Seattle street legand. We shared teh stage with her at Ladyfest and a couple lesbian events. She was a militant punk rock/folk guitarist(actually it was a quatro - a 4 string guitar) from Venezuela, who often sported a goatie drawn on with a magic marker. She was a top notch musician and a very passionate street performer. After Nirvana Broke up, the bassist's next move was to try and recruit Yva. She was very strong minded and agressive in her POV. My room mate at the time had a smoke machine so we recruited him. He would do sonic youth indy type vocals but his real talent was random performace art. He would show up wearing bizarre costumes and would duct tape stuffed animals to people in the audience.

We also tried out this older dude we met through the local paper. He had a big bald head that had weird ridges in it - he looked like humpty dumpty after the fall. He said that he had a bad motorcycle accident - and spent his time collecting disability and writing lyrics. when we passed him the mic he would do cartoon scat singing. He later admitted he hated hip hop.

My Ex-GF was friends with Sky Cries Mary. And they recommended working with this one MC/producer who pulled in decent shows but was iffy and hard to work with. The guy loved threatening to sue people all the time. Nuff said.

One of our crew goals was to work with as many DJs, producers and bands as possible.

We rocked with the star dj from the seattle scene called DJ Naha, lacing her mix sets on internet radio and at her Digital Hardcore night called merciless.

We rocked over DJ sets from DJ Luying who was the top DJ in Seattles Lesbian scene at the time.

we tried working with this awesome turntablist who lived in his moms garage and had a narcolepsy problem. He was cool but was kind of iffy. he would not show up for a gig... and we'd ask him about it. He said he was there an hour early and fell asleep in his car until hours after the show.

We later grabbed this DJ named ZOmbie who had an entourage of zombie kids that would show up at our gigs decked out as zombies. He didnt really like the crew drama tho.

We hooked up with some digital Hardcore producers (SPoradik, Nogunri... and some people im forgetting). They had a cable show called World of Danger and specialized is psychodelic porn montages called kaleidoscope porn. We did a grip of shows with them. Nice brutal IDM hardcore beats.

They were excited that we would rap over any BPM and any groove. That was one of our specialties - we would practive flowing over all types of music including, salsa fusion, gabber, dub, jazz in weird time signatures. just to be prepared for anything.

We rocked with this IDM producer named Yoko Phono who did nice Techno Illbient influenced by Underground Resistance.

We hooked up with a grunge band, Beautiful Mothers, and did a couple gigs.

We dropped in on sets with Seattles big rockabilly band. Cant remember their name either. They were surprised that we could do classic country and swing style raps.

Sometimes it would go bad though

ONe time we hooked up with an acid jazz band in the news paper and offered to show up at their next gig. We got bored and drunk waiting to perform and started to slap box and spar with each other using "thai kwon do" moves we just learned on the street to pass the time. When it was time to rock the mic, the band turned out to be a bunch of newbie players all playing dots composed by one nerdy asian dude who only wanted us to rap for like 4 bars during the entire set. we barely had time to get warmed up before they cut off our mics. We ended up doing a set with teh next band who understood the basic concept of holding a groove for a few minutes. I gues they got sore because later when we needed a ride home - denied. (we took the bus for some reason, and my gf at the time was too drunk to stand).

We also tried to pull in dancers. They were the hardest people to recruit. And I soon learned to video tape the audition, because they would get scared off at the first meeting.

We auditioned this one fire dancer chick who had worked on a hash farm in Barcelona, and rocked underground cave parties while living as a squatter in Barcelona (you can see her videos on prince-charming.net)

We auditioned this one modern ballet/hip hop dancer/hippie chick who spoke “fairy language” and had participated in underground psychopharmacology tests. (you can see her videos on prince-charming.net)

And we tried out this one chick that I only remember because she tried to tried to change her audition to singing and wanted to sing off-key Abba over our beats.

Eventually my GF at the time, who was an amazing Flamenco dancer and had been training obsessively for 7+ years agreed to dance for us. The only catch was that she had HORRIBLE stage fright. She had to get obliterated on booze before she stepped on stage. Unfortunately her personality completely changed when she got drunk – it was an amazing transformation like dr. jeckel and Mr Hyde – the muscles of her face took on a completely different posture. She would try to start fights, start exposing herself, and/or fall flat on her face – performing elaborate classical flamenco dance the whole time. At some shows I was literally holding her up while I rapped.

We still tried to work with the guitare player. I would work with him in the lab rocking beats. But he would sabotage them so they couldnt be used live. He would chop off the ending, and lame stuff like that. On occasion if a gig was publicized or high profile, he would show up and try to sabotage. At first I thought he had a rational beef, like "artistic differances" or "egos" or something within an expected range of band beefs. then he showed his true colors. but thats another story...

ROOTS: NYU part1

I noticed in my last Seattle blog that Im calling a grip of people "psychos." Im not a mental health professional - so I will qualify that these peoples could be bi-polar, and/or borderline character disorder types. Yunno, people that can be very colorful, unusual and entertaining, or in-your-face fucking psycho.

My roots working with these sorts of people goes back to film school at nyu; back in the late 80s and early 90s (the Reagan/Bush1 years) there was a big gov cutback on public health services; in the name of patient rights, mental hospitals started dumping the seriously ill onto the streets. THeres an rural small town American tradition of putting trouble makers and mentally ill folks onto greyhound buses with a one way ticket to NYC. So the streets of Manhattan were over-run with the homeless, many of them very sick. THese "street trolls" had staked out every single corner on every block and the half way mark too. THey had differant pan handling tactics from pathetically crawling through the gutter and wimpering, to intimidation and stalking.

At NYU I was a broke student, so for entertainment I would get a 40oz, and walk the streets talking to characters. Even in the dead of winter, there are all sorts of entertaining local characters out and about. My GF at the time (another film student) was especially interested in kicking it with the crazies. She would approach the most menacing freaky homeless dudes and start telling them intimate details of her life. It was really scary at first, but eventually I got used to it.

In the NYU film program, some classes had a tight production schedule where we had to make a new film every week or couple weeks. It was hard to pull in professional actors willing to work for free, and the student drama program was walled off from the film program for some reason. no interaction whatsoever. Some students would have crew members double as actors. Some students would goto a few eccentric actors that were always available for student films. My GF got the bright idea to start casting dangerous freaky crazy homeless dudes in her projects.

In her first production, she had Hector the "Puerto Rican Mr. T" crash at her moms house. He typically sported a poncho, giant beard, floppy hat, weight lifters belt, lots of cheap "gold" chains, and rings. THe guy was huge. We told her mom that he was a legit actor and had starred in many Bawny Paper Towel commercials. He demanded payment in "OE" (Old English 800 - Malt Liquor). It went okay - the film was set in a long island "safety village" a go cart track with miniature houses where elementary school kids learned about traffic safety. THe puerto rican mr. T was supposed to be kidnapped by a cyclops - but he refused to allow himself to be tied up - claiming that he was satanically abused by both his parents in puerto rico as a child.

Her next film starred Ron, this guy we met at a psychic fair who had a cat on a leash. The cat looked like Morris from the talking cat commercials, and Ron was convinced that his cat was going to make him rich and famous. He lived in his car, but during the winter he broke into an old ladies house and secretly lived in her basement; he kept turning off the old ladies heat becasue he said the furnace made his hair fall out. Like many street hustlers, Ron used his cat to get attention around the city; I've seen crazy sleaze bags who looked like psycho killers get all sorts of female attention becasue they had a pet monkey on their shouldar; keeping a starving dog was a common homeless tactic to beg money for food. Ron's cat was his hostage - he would smuggle the cat everywhere stuffed in his coat or duffle bag. Even worse was that he was keeping two litters of cats from teh same mother hidden in the old ladies green house, about the size of a gardening shed. But thats another story. We shot one video with Ron - improvising a surreal comedy around Long Island. Ron had no sense of humor, and would not repeat the lines we fed him about being an acid casualty. SO we over dubbed a bad lepprican voice over the footage in post production.

The Magnum Opus of my film school output was a piece we shot for an experiemental video class. The teacher was a total motherfucker, but approved the video (only 4 projects were picked out of a class of 25); he said it was so flakey that he had to see how it turned out. Basically it was about a religious film school at sea and a battle between a boy in a plastic bubble, and another student witha magic tattoo. We got the idea from a Singaporian student who was obsessed with catholicism - to him it was super exotic and cool, and he made films about catholic school girls with visions of saints. My GFs father died before production so I did most of the directing this time. Our narrative was over an hour long with dozens of locations and a cast of over 50 actors and actresses. Our auditions were unusual becasue we had all the actors in the same room so they could watch each others performances - we didnt know this was a bad idea. It created a super aggro vibe - one actor did a faith healing piece and ended up hitting every other actor in the forehead - you could hear their heads bouncing off hte walls behind them. He fled at the end of his performance, after he realized he crossed a line.

For the auditions, we gave them the choice of doing their standard audition piece or improv - or we would give them a super surreal and psychotic improv. We struck gold. A dangerous paranoid schizophrenic star stalker who was obsessed with being a movie star auditioned. He had been locked up for trying to kill people, he had a police restraining order to keep him away from tribecca studio and a certain pizza parlor he was obsessed with and the other NYU student were terrified of him. His M.O. was to audition for films, get the brush off and start leaving threatening messages on the student directors answering machine (yes, this was abfore voice mail). This time he came in, we gave him an improv about baby sitting a giant mount of killer army ants and getting them to line up boy/girl boy/girl. and he started acting psychotic. HILARIOUS. BRILLIANT. he kept trying to trick the ants. We gave him the starring role on the spot.

We recruited other characters like a 60 or 70 something year old starlett who was a 1960s bomb shell in Italy and had appeared in Fellini films. She still thought of herself as a sex goddess and would show off lots of cleavage. Unfortunately the only people that wanted to hire her were Trauma - who had her star as Toxic Avengers Mother. We also recruited a couple middle aged mafia type guys: Franky and Jimmy. their headshot resumes were hilarious. they worked at the track, had dock experience piloting barges, and many years vending machine experience. I asked one of them point blank if he was in the mob and he said. "No, but if youre at the docks, ask for Nickels Jimmy." The shoot was amazing. THe schizo had echolalia, and drooled. SOmetimes his improv was basically repeating the other actors line and screaming it in weird voices. Other times he would make weird threats about being on his last war path. Or repeat things from psyche tests. One night we left him in a living room on the sleepr couch with the TV on, assuming that he would go to sleep; instead he watched the tv turned to static all night like poltergiest, and was super aggro the next day. Most of the time he was super agreeable - during a scene he was lost a sea he kept offering to jump in the water even though he couldnt swim. The Italian starlette kept insisting that the schizo was an amatuer and that he was crazy and she couldnt work with him. The schizo thought the starlette was crazy for ebing a primadona. The starlett would take 2 hours to get ready before any shoot piling three wigs on her head to create a 60s superdoo. She was also fighting with the mobsters, one of whom offered to sleep with her out of pity. THe movie was a smashing success (on an artistic level). but there werent narrative video festivals back in the day - just documentary.

After that we kept hanging out with kieth, he would show up weird places like celebrity horse shows by my gfs family's house. He seemed to be well known as a volinteer as part of his star stalking activities. He was obsessed with gangsters and becoming famous and asked us to tell him all sorts of lies that fed into his psychotic obsessions. we obliged and would tell him stories about his face being projected over dead shows in china. and how professional actors had hinges in thier skulls and created most headshots by photographing their faces. At the premier the schizo had taken his medication and was a completely differant person. It was bizarre. He was super clean cut and passed for a normal guy. We were wondering if all the bizarre craziness was all an act.... When we gave him a copy of the film he left it on a shrine to saint christopher.

I made my next film with the same guy. Unfortunately I was using film stock so I couldnt improvise. and Kieth was having trouble with his lines. I needed to direct him by using cues from his psychosis and would essentially direct him by tellling him that the student film was being made from a million dollar loan from the mob. and that the camera guy was mafia enforcer and would execute the entire crew if anyone flubbed a line. the film turned out great but the crew was apalled. they didnt know about the existing relationship I had with the guy. He knew I was telling him stories, and really wanted me to tell him crazy stuff because it pushed his buttons. He told me that directly.

From all that experience, I developed a certain comfortability around working with crazies. And have had success advising friends who were harassed by dangerous schizos. Dangerous manipulative psychopaths are trickier to deal with. but thats another story...

MUSICAL ROOTS: SEATTLE Pt.1

Here's a rambling story about the misfit hip hop crew I started in seattle.

the crew began in detroit when I recruited an old guitar player friend from highschool to fill out my live sound on a PRINCE CHARMING Europian tour. The tour never happened. We recorded some music. moved to seattle. And started to play some shows. We would do some psyche noise jams, play a few songs, do some spoken word, rap a bit, rotate instruments and repeat. Everything was basicaly dub hop but was drowned under 1000 feet of noise. People thought we were a noise band. So we decided to recruit other people to fill out our sound, especially a singer. Im not much of a singer, and the guitar player didnt want to sing.

So I brought in this female folk singer. I met the singer through a model chick that had just got out of the psyche ward (a friend of a friend of my gallery owner room mate). THe model had fried her brain on some unknown substance and was found wandering the streets naked knocking on peoples doors. It was really tragic, but if youre going to have a nude schizo knocking on your door in the middle of the night - a hot young model chick is not the worst that could happen. the model made these amazing pictogrphic maps of Seattle while in the hospital, and I was trying to get one from her. but thats another story. THe folk singer had magic brains too, she was a runaway from some fundamentalist cult. She spoke in tongues! Unfortunately, we were unable to pursuade her sing in tongues (she said it was too personal). Much to our dismay the folk singer didnt really have a sense of humor. The guitar player took an instant dislike to her and vetoed her. SHe had an awesome voice and stage presence, but I let the veto go since she had the vibe of someone who was ready to explode or vanish without warning.

The next recruit was this freaky deli counter guy that used his deli gig to try and sell massage services to "older" ladies above 30. He would charge 20$ for 20minutes, or 10minutes if the lady wanted him and the cook to double team them. This guy lived at a crusty punk rock house and when he auditioned drums at three in the afternoon, one of his female room mates started screaming in his face like a wild animal. He brushed her off without losing the slightest bit of cool. I figured the dude had skills and had the right temperment for being in a band so I brought him in for the next gig at a crusty dive bar (where the crusty schizo hooker that organized the show entertained all by finding the creepiest mutant dudes in the club and flirting with them agressively to try and make a sale). The deli guy did a great job on stage showing off some manic latin flows he picked up off the streets of peru - where he had spent some time as a squatter. The guitar player didnt like deli counter guy either - he said the deli guy (now named MC CONFUZ) was crusty and smelled.

I liked Confuz, but I wasnt that into his lyrics about being late for the school bus. Fortunately confuz was a special individual - he was a former jehovahs witness whose father commited suicide on his birthday. *And* he once made a deal with satan while under the influence of something or another. So he had all sorts of special paranoid brains that were perfect for writing occult influenced horrorcore hip hop lyrics. He didnt really understand goth but he did his best to combine his sincere gangster rap lyrics with his fantasy version of gothic (that he got from reading Gothic Beauty Magazine). the result was a hilarious mix of bible quotes, gangster posturing and references to the cheesiest gothic fashions.

If i remember right, the next show was at another punk dive bar. One of Confuz's friends "Sexually Active Corpse" was opening. THe guy kept exposing himself to random chicks and pulling down his pants on the dance floor. Corpse had a rep for doing GG Allen meets Residents style performances, but I dont even remember if he was bounced before he performed that night. There was a lot going on. My room mate was poly-amorous and was always doing bizarre stuff like having orgies in the living room. He was only honest to about half the women he was involved with. That night one of his female friends dumped a pitcher of beer on his head, which caused another one of his female friends to go bezerk... but the bezerker didnt see who did the pouring, so she jumped on a random guy (a harmless nerdy artist) and started punching him in the face. Stuff like that. Our show went good. The audience really liked the rapping. But Sexually active corpse stole the guitar players guitar case at some point before running off into some dangerous industrial section of the city and passing out.

After that the guitar player retreated into the lab and rarely showed up for practice or for shows. So Confuz and I started recruiting more rappers.

Musical Roots: Zorthian Ranch

WHen I first moved to LA in 92, I lived in Huntington beach with a surfer. It was interesting to be instantaneously admitted deep into the surfer subculture. THey were super territorial and aggro like outlaw bikers. Rather than the clean cut types I expected from listening to the beach boys. THe surfer would get up before dawn to surf, then work at a scam call center for a few hours selling fake toner to confused corporate assistants at ten times the market price, then he would surf for a few more hours. I remember the OC mosh pits were filled with aggro jock types that were aggressively trying to hurt each other. Lots of racists blasting the beastie boys first album.

I then moved to Los Feliz, which was a hipster area at that time. It was the era of that movie "Swingers" - with the retro Dresden room, and the Derby. But also Amok books (extremes of information in print, http://www.amokbooks.com/), a coffee shop that was a big hub for the underground comix scene, X-Large clothing and Mondo Video (a super freakie video store - advertising themselves as "Weirdos, Perverts, Sickos, Creepy Uncles, Crazy Aunts, Amputees, Clowns, Porn Stars, Drunks, and all the rest" they later went on to become a porn production company and would try to lure customers into the back room to get blow jobs for their productions.)

I then moved to the Zorthian Ranch, where I lived from 93-95; its a famous Bohemian compound in the hills above Pasadena. It predated the hippie commune movement by about twenty years and still exists in some form even today.

Recorded live at Jirayr Zorthian's Ranch, Altadena, California, Monday, July 14, 1952. This super-rare recording was made at excentic millionaire Jirayr Zorthian's home in California as features a 74 minutes performance by Bird that has never been heard before now. This historic session was recorded during one of larger than life painter and sculptor Zorthian's infamous sex, drugs and booze parties - attended by a wealth of intellectuals, artists and hangers-on. These parties became known throughout Southern California as they would last for several days at a time.
Bird attended one of these parties, on July 14, 1952, and had the bright idea of bringing along a tape recorder to capture the event. this was clearly a wild night as a massive striptease was arranged before and during Bird's rendition of "Embraceable You"! Back to the story, Jirayr invited us up for a visit and I saw that he had structures for rent. My GF at the time liked it when I made up absurd stories. I believe I told Dabney (Jirayr's wife) a story about how I made puppets out of garbage and did street puppet performances for kids. When Dabney believed that story, I escalated and told her I set the puppets on fire before the performances, but that I had to watch out because the puppets had minds of their own and could get agressive with the kids. This seemed to impress the Zorthians and they agreed to rent an old pig pen to me. Much later I had forgotten the entire thing and Dabney asked me about the puppets. It was frightening. Every once in a while I get blind sided by people remembering goofy stuff I told them back in those days. One of the neighbors, Slippy the Dark Greasy Hog Humping Hobbit, was a good friend of Jason Rhoades and was a student of Paul McCarthy.

So I would hang out with Slippy and his artist friends; at the time I didnt realize it, but when I would tell them that Im filling up a warehouse with cotton candy and that I was trying to corner the market with cotton candy - it sounded perfectly reasonable to them and they would ask me about it years later.

This post is just a taste of the Zorthian ranch influence. It was a bee farm, junk yard, trailer park. THe bees were a problem because they would go rogue and set up honey comb hide outs in random places, like my outhouse. Its unnerving to have bees buzzing around your back side when youre doing your business. Plus they attract black widdow spiders. Jirayr was into building structures out of "recycled" aka cheap materials, like rail road ties and telephone poles. WHich is dope except when forrest fire threatened the ranch on three sides and the fire fighters pointed out that both railroad ties and telephone poles are soaked in a chemical thats water resistent and highly flamable. But thats another story. At the time I lived there Jirayr's big project was damming one of the ravines to make a lake. So paving companies were allowed to dispose of concrete/dump for free about a hundred yards from my house. This happened every 15minutes all day long for months on end. Eventually an acid wash jeans company offered to dump the rocks they used to process the jeans. Which seemed like a good idea until there was a rain and one of the local creeks started running blue with toxic (cobalt?) dye. Typically when building or health inspectors arrived at the ranch, Jirayr would get them drunk and show them his nude etchings and they would leave the harmless eccentric alone, but this time the neighbors were too pissed - and it was a mess. but thats another story... Like the one time a fancy hollywood producer friend was visiting and a horse died on his GFs car. It was a really beautiful white horse and it was convulsing on the concrete and stood up and stumbled and collapsed on her car. I can still hear the sound of the horses skull on the concrete. Instead of taking the horse to the dump (or whatever you do with a horse carcass) Jirayr had it dumped in the ravine where it created a horrible horrible stench. Im sure the sickly odor and the sound of crashing rubble had subconscious effect on my music at the time. My neighbors were magicians, and I would come home from work and find them catching bats above my patio with a butterfly net or hanging from a crane in a straight jacket. I will go into more details later. But regarding music: one of my neighbors, Brian Carlson, made musical instruments as a hobby. He had mechanical metal drums made out of oil barrels, a steel chello, and things like that. He was friends with Members of the Shadow Project and had a side project called EXP with his GF at the time. Eventally Roz from Christian Death was a member. THey would do stage shows where they would dissect a rotting donkey caracass they found in the desert rotting by the side of the highway. Brian made amazing $5,000 djimbe drums out of zebra wood. SO amazing drummers from all around LA would come to his drumming parties. Many had thier own drum schools (African, Latin, Gypsy) or were professional studio drummers. Or they were part of various hippie or drum scenes.

The above clip only hints at the type of parties that were going on at the ranch at the time. I never realized that there was such a wide range of hippies: Manson hippies, rennaisance fair hippies, gypsy bikers, cultists. Just before I moved the the ranch, there used to be a lesbian rastafarian cult living up there called the sensemilla women. It was led by a man who claimed to be a lesbian trapped in a mans body. They used to have a mountain lion they would lead around on a leash (Babu?). They would still get mail from some rasta cult in Hawaii. I heard lots of stories about other hippie compounds. Nudist airports on mountain tops and etc. The Zorthian ranch was on a hilltop by the way.

At that time I was participating in hip hop cyphers with the O.G. Shapeshifters, Basement Unit, and other B-Boys. I met them through an Ex-GF who started talking to Devin Flynn at a copy shop.

Devin thought it was a hook up and invited her back to his place. She told me that it was some artist she wanted to work with, and asked me along to play body guard. We get there, and at first he thought it was a robery, since he wasnt expecting me. but after introductions he starts showing his portfolio of the cover of can control magazine, sets he painted for grand master flash at the apollo theater and etc. My gf tells him that Im an MC. Which at the time, my experience was doing UTFO covers at punk rock shows, and generally f'ing around. I did more jamaican toasting than raps - from my ska interest. So I was intimidated to start rapping for some one with massive hip hop cred. FOrtunately, Devin liked my wacked out lyrics about giving hitch hikers wedgies and etc. and I started playing bass for the cyphers Devin had at his house. I would get on the mic some times, and even though I couldnt freestyle, they appreciated my crazy subject matter. This was way before abstract underground hip hop like, def jux, anticon, dr.octagon. After that had been going on for a while, I would try and get the B-Boys to mix with the hippies. I was in a short lived band with my friend Ross and his homie Max (who was the label manager for Grand Royal records - I think he may have gone on to Mo Wax before they got really big). I guess they thought I was too much of a freak. The wall of my living room swung open and there would be a herd of goats watching us jam. Anyhow, I would take the Hedz up to the hippie drumming parties. Some of the B-Boys wish that they could play live drums but just didnt have the skills/technique. The hippies were repulsed by rap, as it suggested to them all sorts of geto stereotypes about traditional gender roles and violence. I remember taking some of the B-boys and their friends visiting from NYC out hiking in the moonlight and they were scared to death. It was funny to see latin club chicks in plexiglass platform hills trying to hike, and freak out when I told them that the trail was called sasquach ridge. they were just out of their element, and it made them paranoid. I had to explain that humans were the most dangerous wild animals. (this was before A mountain lion jumped on a mountain biker in broad daylight a few months later and illustrated the danger of the wild neighbors.) The ranch itself was located on the other side of a weird black middle class geto where all the houses were nice but people still walked down the street with golf clubs as walking sticks. At the local liquor store, ABC crips would try to intimidate people. THey would group around my car with their bandanas pulled up jesse james style, like they were going to attack. Slippy once drove through a gun battle and had bullets pinging off his vintage mustang. I remember at one drumming party, I took a friend from CBS grafitti crew to the 7-11 to get a 40oz and he started a fight with a two carloads of gangsters. Hmmm. I will save that story for later.

Aside from the drumming parties, the Tuvan throat singers would show up every year. They would tour the united states as part of some Tuvan folk music championship. I belive one of the Cal Tech scientists had a Tuvan appreciation society, and they loved the ponies that Zorthian kept. So every year these Tuvan Shaman would show up and we would jam with them, they even taught me to throat sing.

Yes this guy is holy man, but him and his buddies didnt look that way when I first me them; they were wandering around the ranch wearing speedos and drinking o'douls non-alchoholic beer. They wanted me to find them whores. Which was kinda funny since it never occured to me to pay for affection. I had to think about it for a minute before I suggested the yellow pages. Later I found out that musicians are the same all over and the folk singers had a rep as womanizers, Tuvan women would not travel with them. One of my neighbors found them stealing a headlight from one of his school buses (another hippie stytle). The Tuvans said that headlamps were very rare and expensive in Tuva and Russian headlamps sucked. My friend gave them some spare headlights and they gave him an antique jews harp made out of deer antler. It was probably blessed with magic powers.
